Product Overview

The S0100 serger saves you time because it sews a seam and seam finish at the same time, while trimming away the excess seam allowance. Seams and seam finishes - just like you see on store-bought garments - are possible thanks to the serger. You can use 2 threads, 3 threads or 4 threads for a variety of stitch combinations. Sew those narrow little hems on napkins, or stitch up a knit top with seams that stretch with the fabric without popping. Sew a decorative edge around a fleece blanket for an extra bit of flair. Differential Feed allows you to sew super stretchy fabrics without the wavy distortion and sheers without puckering. The Built-in Free Arm makes it possible to sew around small sleeves and cuffs - great for children's clothing and more. You'll love the professional results your serger gives your projects.
  • 6 built-in stitches - choose from a variety of stitches for basic sewing, decorative sewing, and more
  • Customize appearance of a stitch by increasing or decreasing distance between stitches, use function for various stitch techniques like applique, basting and more
  • Size of stitch from left to right is adjustable, to make stitch sew narrower or wider as desired
  • Choose from seams finishes, hem finishes and decorative edges thanks to a variety of stitch combinations available
  • Threading path for each thread is indicated with a specific color to simplify threading process, handy reference diagrams are also included right on machine
  • Controls ratio of movement between front and back sections of feed teeth. Use to help remove distortion from seams in stretchy fabrics or puckers from seams in lightweight or silky fabrics
  • Just slide a lever to easily convert machine for rolled hem sewing - no need to change stitch plate
  • Upper knife can be engaged to trim excess seam allowance as you sew, or it can be rolled out of way for special techniques like flatlocking or anytime when you don't want machine to trim
  • Machine's interior frame is metal, providing long lasting durability
  • Professional speed for faster results
  • Set maximum sewing speed of machine
  • Long lasting LED lighting provides bright illumination and stays cool to touch
  • Presser foot has an extra high position available to accommodate thick fabrics
  • Included accessories: general purpose foot, tweezers, extra needles, cone adapters (on machine), screwdriver, foot controller

They make it easy to learn
This is my first serger, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but the color coded graphs and the online manual make starting easier to figure out

Nice Serger
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a very nice serger. The first thing I noticed right out of the box is it has a handle on top. Previous sergers I have owned did not have this. It may not sound like a big deal, but for someone like me who works in a small space a carrying handle makes a huge difference when moving things around. The bottom of the machine has feet that form suction cups and hold the machine in place against a table. When I pulled my machine out of the box, it had some oil or grease on the bottom. Not a big deal and easy to clean off. I’m assuming it was probably oiled not long before shipping. My serger came already threaded, so I was able to tie my new thread on easily. The front opening is lighted which is very helpful when threading. I like that you have the option to use 2, 3, or 4 threads and there are various stitch styles and widths depending on your project. Another nice feature is this serger has an extension that comes off, so you have a free arm to sew smaller items and difficult areas like armholes. The accessories (extra needles and screwdriver) were inside the extension when I pulled it off. There are also tweezers located inside the front cover. I started by sewing on some scrap fabric. I did have to adjust the tension a little but once I got the right setting I got a very nice clean edge. My first project was making my own ribbon to put on a birthday present, and it came out very nice! The one issue I do have is the manual doesn’t quite match up with my machine. According to the manual, both the stitch length dial and the differential feed should both be set to “N” for most sewing. “N” is not an option on either of those dials. I’m making note of what the dials were set to out of the box and I’ll probably just experiment on scrap fabric to determine the correct settings for certain stitches/fabrics. Overall, this a great serger and I think I’ll be using it for a long time.

SO100 Great serger for the price!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This machine is well built and feels solid. I like the suction cups on the bottom which keeps it secure and steady. It comes partially threaded so all you have to do is tie your spool thread to the existing thread and pull it through. If you have trouble doing that and have to rethread, don't worry, follow the thread map. A quick guide is actually on the inside of the machine front cover and the illustrations are very clear. Just be sure you do it in the order the illustration and manual suggests! One feature I love is it has an interior light so visibility is great for threading. The handwheel is a little tight to manually turn. I tried all the stiches with 4, 3, & 2 threads and left, right needle and both needles. The overlock stitches were all beautiful and perfect and the rolled hem will be especially useful for my hobby. You can also slide off the flat bed extension for free arm stitching. The machine runs a little loud but not overbearing. In my experience, they all run loud. Overall, I think this is a great little machine. A good deal!

So far so good. Powerful and easy to change threads. Leaves a nice edge. Will update if things change.

      Machine basics
Great machine. I wish that it had a manual. That’s definitely a downside. When it said that the machine came threaded, I thought it would include 4 spools of thread, but I was wrong. It just threaded a piece of thread for each spool. Kind of silly, don’t you think? I just pulled them all out and threaded it again. You should include spools so that a person can use it straightaway. Also the color of the dots, particularly the red, needs to be more vibrant. In certain light they are difficult to distinguish. My mother had an earlier model with just 3 spools snd the indicator dot colors were very bright. It was much easier to see them when threading. And I am wondering why the tweezers are plastic instead of metal. You should upgrade that item. Metal will last longer.

This is my first serger and I love how it...
This is my first serger and I love how it provides a professional finish to my items. I've had this overlock serger for less than 2 weeks and it has made completing my sewing projects so much easier. I've also seen a significant reduction in the time it takes for me to complete a project. The one down side is that it does not come with a hardcopy users manual; you must download the digital version. At this time, I would say that I recommend this product. However, I will use it for a few months and a post an update on how it's holding up. For reference, I'm a beginner and sew as a hobby; making jackets, skirts, and dresses/garments for myself and family members. So I will probably only use the machine a couple days out of the week (max) depending on what I am working on.

      Outstanding Serger!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Excellent serger for both the beginner and expert sewer. You can use 2, 3, or 4 threads to make those perfect seams that you see in store bought clothes. This machine sews the seam, finishes the seam, and cuts off the excess fabric at one time, MAGIC! It takes a bit of practice for threading the machine but there are color coding to help you with this. I use the tweezers, which makes it easier, cause I find my fingers just get in the way and block my view. I am thankful that the machine will not run with the door open as the blades ate very sharp. This is a great safety feature cause I tend to use my fingers to pull out a "tangle". The only downside is that you have to download the manual, but this seems to be the way it is with everything you buy now. I personally need a manual to refer to and I like a copy in my hand, but I guess I could print a copy and not including a manual does save trees.

          Solid Serger
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I will begin by contrasting the S0100 with the ProFinish serger I already own. Internally they are the same machine. This is a good thing because the Profinish is a fine serger. I am not going to say too much about the sewing capabilities of either machine except that they both are fast and efficient, producing well-formed stitches when properly tensioned. Interestingly, the S0100 sews a perfect 4-thread overlock stitch with all tensions set exactly at three. This is the way it should be, but I have to tweak the Profinish a bit to get the same result. The main differences between these machines are cosmetic, and most of them are positive. The greatest positive new feature on the S0100 is the LED light inside the looper area. When you open the door to this area the light comes on. No longer do you have to hold a flashlight in your mouth to work with the loopers or thread the needles. One caveat with respect to the door to the looper area is that when it is open the machine will not run. This is probably a safety feature to prevent harm to a child if the pedal is accidently pressed while his fingers are in the looper mechanism, and, in that regard, is a good thing. I like to run out a chain with the door open after clearing a rat nest from the finger to make sure everything is as it should be, but I can live with the safety feature. Actually, you can over-ride this feature with a thin pencil, but nobody is recommending that. One last new feature in the looper area of the S0100, which ranks right up there with the LED light, is the large tweezer attached to the door. It is a brilliant idea. I actually use the tweezer, rather than my clumsy fingers or the point of the scissor, to thread because it is right at hand. The S0100 is a much sleeker looking machine with smooth lines. The flat bed extension gives up a little surface area at the corners with this smoothing, but you are not going to miss it. The extension is easier to remove than the one on the Profinish. This next point probably does not matter to anybody but me. The on/off switch and power cord socket are reversed on the S0100. The location where I use the machine makes it awkward to reach around the cord to toggle the switch. That is pretty nit-picky, but I mention it for completeness. I should have discussed the manual first since we all know that you always read the manual of a new product before using it. Singer puts the manual online which makes this easy. I was able to read the manual before the machine arrived. I held the manual till last because I wanted to open with the S0100’s positive features. The manual is a major disappointment. I really like the drawings to describe the parts and demonstrate the threading. They are much clearer than the photographs used in the ProFinish manual. As good as the drawings are they are over-shadowed by the deficit of the Stitch Table. Once you know how to thread the machine the only reason to return to the manual is to look up the settings for a specific stitch. Good luck with that. Many of the tension settings have only the capital letter N. What does the N refer to? Maybe I am missing something here, but I think somebody did a poor job on this table. It gets worse. Look at number 10, the narrow 3-thread flat lock stitch. Forget that the entry says to use the left needle (I believe it should be the right needle for a narrow flat lock), the numbers are wrong. You are never going to pull the ladder open with an 8.5 tension on the needle thread. Also, why is the order of the tensions Y, R, G, B? That is intuitively backwards. I think it even messed up the person writing the manual because in this number 10 entry it shows a dash, no thread, in the upper looper, R, and 0 tension on the right needle, G, which is not even in the machine. Every other entry indicates that the writer is assuming that the headers are B, G, R, Y given the location of the dashes. There are still other problems, e.g. the narrow 3-thread flat lock will still not work with a 5 tension on the needle thread. Also, the wide 3-thread flat lock entry is number 14. Why are not these two stitches together? This is a real missed opportunity for Singer because they went to a lot of trouble to define fabric types and set up a fine tuned grid. Sadly, they filled the grid with garbage. Fortunately, this manual can be fixed with a thorough proof read by somebody expert at serger stitches. In the meantime download the ProFinish manual in addition to the S0100 one. They are essentially the same machine and the stitch examples in the Profinish manual seem accurate. In summary, notwithstanding the manual, the S0100 is a wonderful, functional serger. It has many new thoughtful features that make it easier to use and more productive. With proper tension settings the S0100 sews any stitch in its repertoire beautifully. It is not capable of a cover stitch which is why I am saving up for a Pro5, but that is another story.

            Good but no user’s manual
After researching between a brother serger and this one, Singer came out on top. Four stars because it doesn’t come with a physical manual. You have to download it. This was a gift for my mom, an older woman who is not computer savvy. I mean, come on Singer! For the price we pay you can’t include a user’s manual?
