Questions & Answers

HOW FAR CAN THIS WIRE BE RUN

HOW FAR CAN THIS WIRE BE RUN
Asked by: ROY
This wire is usually used for 20 amp circuits inside homes. For other applications look for current carrying capacity vs run distance tables on line. The National Electrical Code governs wire sizing. This is inside wire not suitable of direct burial so it would be unusual to exceed the 20 amp rating with the kind runs involved Always consult a qualified Electrician if there is any doubt.

Can I used 12/2 for a 230v outlet???
Asked by: Joe
In the 21st century, it would be foolish to install any run without a both a ground wire and a neutral wire even if the immediate application doesn't require a neutral. Recent revisions to the NEC require grounds and neutrals even for retrofits so even if your area is still running on older versions of the NEC (or like my area doesn't even have any code enforcement) it is always wise to use 12/3 for a 240 outlet.
