Can i use this wire to run to the power meter?

Asked by JeffL July 14, 2017

Most likely not. This cable is designed to handle at most 55 A. Unless you have a very small service (like a Little League ball field) is cable will not be large enough to handle the current, and could cause a fire. Please consult with your local permitting authority to make sure you're using the right size of wire for your application.

can I use this wire as an extension cord for a food truck and how much does it way per foot?

Asked by dandy July 10, 2018

Answers

No, this cable is designed for use inside the walls and ceilings of regular construction, where it is protected from abrasion and compression. It is not designed to drag across the sidewalk or be repeatedly stepped on by your patrons. On the other hand, there is a product called rubber jacketed cord (or SO cable) which has a tough, neoprene outer jacket that is designed for use in harsh conditions. It is possible to find SO cable in an 8/3 configuration, but it brings up the question, "Does your food truck use as much power as a stove?" Cabling that uses a 8 gauge conductors can carry up to 50 A. The three conductors (plus ground) allow for 240 V service. This product is often used to supply regular kitchen ranges. For safety, please remember to use a plug that properly connects all four conductors. Also, this size of cable tends to be heavy, sometimes weighing as much as 8 oz per foot.

Can this wire be placed in conduit for a tankless water heater?

Asked by Eddie January 1, 2019

Answers

The National Electric Code (NEC) does NOT allow for jacketed (Romex) cable to be pulled through conduit, because the heat can't escape properly. On the other hand, if you strip off the outer jacket (and kraft paper fillers), and then pull only the insulated conductors through the conduit, that should be allowed (considering conduit "fill" and all that). Please check with your permitting authority to be sure you are complying with code.

what gage wire is needed for electric range hookup

Asked by rls May 7, 2017

IF COPPER 6 Gauge for a 50 AMP range. 8 Gauge for 40 AMP. If unsure about your range use the 6 Gauge. The receptacle is rated 50 amp so works for either 6 or 8 Gauge. I would never use aluminum except for service panel entrance wire but that's just me.

Quite a few. You count them and post back here.

Can this cable be used to wire a NEMA14-50 outlet (for 240VAC, 40A service) at 100 feet from 50A ...

Asked by SilentRide October 8, 2017

Answers

Quite possibly. This cable is designed for use supplying electric service to clothes dryers and kitchen ranges, which sounds like application you have, just as long as you don't run any of this cable through conduit. The connections on the outlet should indicate their use, but usually the "different" conductor (hooked, round, bent, etc.) is the ground, and the one opposite to it is the neutral, or white. The other two are red and black, and it usually doesn't matter which one is which. It is always good to talk to your permitting authority to make sure you are complying with all local code.

Quality product with nice clean copper, the ground wire is not insulated but it is protected in the main casing of the cable. It's a nice value and pulled well thru 3/4 conduit.
