Is this rated for outdoor use? THWN?

Asked by Paul March 5, 2019
1
Answer

THHN carries a THWN-2 rating on sizes 8 gauge and larger, which is moisture resistant. However, THHN must be ran through a watertight conduit for outdoor use. It cannot be used for direct burial. If being used as THWN-2, in wet or dry locations operating temperatures cannot exceed 90 ° or 75° when exposed to oil. If being used as THWN, wet locations cannot exceed 75° and cannot exceed 90° in dry locations.

What gauge do i need for neutral wire? For a 200 amp service

Answer

Please consult your local electrician. The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at www.nfpa.org/freeaccess. The NEC and local building codes regulate the types of wire and cable that can be used in specific electrical applications, as well as the manner of installation. Check your local building codes before you start any wiring and cable electrical project and be sure to obtain required permits. When your work is complete, always have it inspected for compliance with local codes to ensure that it has been safely installed.

Is this wire acceptable for running a Lincoln AC 225 arc welder on?

Asked by Jon September 20, 2017
1
Answer

The Lincoln 225 amp arc welders I remember only required a maximum input circuit of 50 amps at 240 volts, a requirement which you can easily meet with a #6 AWG circuit. In a residential installation I would use 6-2 NM-B cable (aka Romex). Check the data plate on the welder for input current requirements. I suspect you are looking at the 225 amp rating which is the maximum rated output current.

Need to run power from main down 275 ft to a shed for lights, power plugs, and outside yard lights.

Asked by Juarez July 17, 2017

Answer

First you need to do a load calculation to determine how many amps the feeder must provide. Then you need to do a voltage drop calculation to determine what size feeder you need to keep voltage drop under 5%. Voltage drop calculators are available online and require you provide length of feeder, wire size and calculated load. Once you install a subpanel, following all subpanel rules, you can used 12-2 NM-B cable as long as the shed is weathertight.
