Can this wire be run under house floor

Asked by BUSTER December 16, 2019
1
Answer

The product can be used where type NM-B is allowed by the NEC. This typically is reserved for normally dry locations. If being installed in a crawl space underneath a house, it would be best to use a product that is able to be exposed to wet or damp locations, such as UF-B cable. The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at www.nfpa.org/freeaccess. The NEC and local building codes regulate the types of wire and cable that can be used in specific electrical applications, as well as the manner of installation. Check your local building codes before you start any wiring and cable electrical project and be sure to obtain required permits. When your work is complete, always have it inspected for compliance with local codes to ensure that it has been safely installed.

Can this cable be used for a Lincoln AC 225 welder. It says it needs a 50 amp breaker

Asked by Robert November 15, 2019

Answers

Welders use power intermittently so they fall under different rules. My welder calls for 12awg and 40a circult. That said, your owner's manual will tell you what is recommended for your specific welder, but in general 8awg pairs with a 40a 240v circuit and 6awg with a 50amp circuit.

Answer

NM-B cable may be run in air voids of masonry block or tile walls where such walls are not wet or damp locations. It can also be ran into conduit of 1” in diameter. As far as exposure, depends upon the location and the judgement of the local inspector. Usually exposed cables are not allowed as they will be subject to physical damage which is not allowed by the NEC. UF-B Cable can be direct buried or installed in conduit. See NEC Article 340 for more information and please reference Article 334 in NEC which lists conditions where it can be exposed. The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at www.nfpa.org/freeaccess. I purchased about 10’ of this Romex to hard wire my stove and add a 50A 240VAC receptacle inside my garage. The wire is easy to use, stripping insulation is a breeze. Good for applications where 2 hot legs and ground are required. If you’re running a common, you might want to get 8/3. Check your local codes before purchase!
