As best I can tell from mine, the lengths listed are the approximate lengths of the clamp from front to back. If you're asking how far each clamp's jaws open, I measured mine. The 6 in clamp (actually 6-1/4 in long) opened 2-3/8 in; the 4 in clamp (actually 4-1/2 in long) opened 1-3/4 in; the 3 in clamp (actually 3-3/8 in long) opened 1-1/4 in; and the 2 in clamp (about 2-1/2 in long) opened 1 in. Hope that helps.
The length
These are the overall lengths. Jaw openings are 1 / 1.25 / 1.75 / 2.5 inches.
They are not the jaw opening. I looked at the biggest ones in the store, and the jaws open to about 3 inches. So I would guess the others are about 2 inches, 1.5 inches, and 1 inch jaw openings.

You must pad according to the hardness/density of the surface and the wetability of the (fresh) stain/finish.
I use them on all surfaces....I just pad the teeth with a soft material. Just make sure the stain/paint is completely dry.
