For a free standing pergola, are horizontal closure strips required or are they just a recommendation for aesthetics?

              Can you walk on it?

              By|Jun 25, 2026

Hi RaeP, For a free-standing pergola, horizontal closure strips are typically recommended but may not be absolutely required in every installation. Their primary purpose is to help close off the corrugation openings to reduce wind-driven rain, insects, debris, and drafts — not just for appearance.” They are most commonly used at the high and low ends of the panels, especially beneath ridge caps or at eaves, to create a cleaner and more weather-resistant installation.

                  Can they be painted?

                  Answer This Question

Please be advised that SUNTUF panels are slick, non-porous plastic, so paint doesn’t naturally stick well. They expand/contract with temperature, which can cause paint to crack or peel over time. If you choose to panel them the warranty would be void.

                    Used for fence.
I used these for a six foot fence instead of cedar boards. Worked great. To cut with your saw, just flip your circular saw blade backwards and the panels won’t chip. Clean cut every time. Everyone thinks it’s metal until they touch it.

Easy to work with but very inconsistent color match
I purchased the panels and the roof ridge cap, both in castle grey, and they are vastly different colors. The panels are look metallic and sparkly, while the ridge cap looks dark gray (as it should). I didn’t notice the extreme difference until after installing the panels and seeing them in the sunlight. Customer service was very easy to work with and gave a refund for the panels but be sure to check the color match before installing. The product is easy to work with and cut and install, but the color inconsistency is unacceptable.

Only use if the sun never shines near you
This product is awful. As soon as the sun rises it starts heating up and clicks non-stop. No matter how many screws or how tight it clicks. Terrible product if you plan on exposing it to the sun.
