Thank you for your question- The recommended tapping block is model#11242. I'm not sure why they are not stocked in the stores. They can be ordered in the store or online and shipped directly to customer or the store for pickup.

I installed luxury vinyl flooring (Mannington). This should work for the majority if not all luxury vinyl flooring brands.

can anything else be used as a tapping block?

Probably, but this block has a profile that prevents damage to plank edges. It would be an under taking to duplicate as you would need to reinvent the profile. I recommend the block very strongly.

You need this.
I don't usually do reviews, but I decided to do one on this tool to help others. I can't imagine doing the job without this tool. You need this to eliminate the gaps for a tight and professional finish. I had first hesitated spending the extra $10 bucks to get this, but glad I eventually bought it. It is designed specifically so that when you tap on it the edge of the plank does not get damaged. Even if you are doing just one small room, get this and get it done right. Notice my white tapping block on the top right of the attached pic. I am an IT guy and not well versed in home improvement. But with the Allure Ultra and this wonderful little tool I am ready to tackle the other two bedrooms as soon as HD has another good deal on this flooring.

Roght tool for the right job
Yes there are alternative methods of "locking" the vinyl flooring planks into place (using scrap pieces of the flooring for example) but for $10 figured why not buy the appropriate tool for the job.  The block was durable and I installed 35 boxes w/o issues   Others have commented on the block not lasting.  Not sure what type of hammer they are using (I can see this getting damaged using a regular hammer) but using a 12 oz. Double-Face Soft Hammer (Home Depot SKU # 806699) I had no issues with wear or damage at all to the block and it was hit plenty of times with force.  For me it was worth the money and it held up for my entire job.  Would recommend.

The block worked fairly well but then there were times the block would slip and sometimes damage the side of the flooring. We were able to fix some of the damage, but not happy.
