I struggled and it the internet, which was of little help. HOWEVER, the Internet pix did show what the Box was supposed to look like opened, so it helped me to figure out, somewhat, how to approach opening the box. WHAT WORKED FOR ME was NOT to push on the 'press point' indicated at the tip of the key. I pressed down on the OPPOSITE END of the box, WHILE PUSHING THE SLIDING TOP FROM THE HEAD TIP OF THE KEY. Don't know why, but that worked consistently, unlike pushing from the end where the bottom of the key is. I can't give this bad marks because I didn't get it directly from the store. MAYBE THE PACKAGE HAD DIRECTIONS that would have made this task easier, from the beginning. Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Just don’t lock yourself out! I just got locked out in a 40 degree rain while taking out the trash. Stupid me! At least I was smart enough to have a spare house key stashed in the trusty Hillman magnetic key box... or that’s what I was thinking. So I retrieve the Hillman box and knew I’d have a struggle to get the key out. Before hiding the box, I’d rehearsed the best techniques (noted in other reviews here) to open the box... it’s darn near impossible to open on a good day. And now my hands are wet and the box is wet and slippery too. I didn’t stand a chance against this key holding vault. So I’m standing on the porch freezing and wet. And I can’t get my hands or the box dry enough to muscle the thing open. After a few minutes I gave up and got the sledge hammer from the shed. Don’t waste your money on this piece of junk until Hillman figures out how to make a sliding door on this box that doesn’t require tremendous finger strength or a sledge hammer. Lesson learned!

I have a hobby where I've probably opened a hundred of them that lived outside in the weather. I've never damaged a container opening one. They can be a little difficult to open, but if you use Helen's procedure it is fairly easy to open. Press your thumbs on the middle of the picture of the key and push the sliding lid away from you. Try to put your thumbs one in front of the other so you put the least pressure on the edges that slide. Don't try to use the ridged grip, that will press the lid against the body and make it harder to slide. Occasionally I run into one that's little stiff, so after I get a small opening I put something in the opening and twist it to open it more. After that it usually opens easily. The feet do rust out doors and you have to replace them occasionally if your fastidious. I've never know one to stop holding, rusted or not. It would be better if I could add a video but the picture I'm adding will have to do.

Good grief, if people can't figure out how to slide the cover off of this simple box then they may be all thumbs. All three that I own work just fine. Lubricate the lid with a bit of silicone lube if necessary.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Magnetic Key Holder Ever!! I just wanted to write in and tell everyone that if are to get this key holder it won't slip off or anything. And it goes everywhere that you do provided that you put it in a secure enough area on your vehicle. I have one for my car which I take everywhere with me off road, through puddles, on fairly bumpy roads and when I checked it was still there. Recently I purchased one for a car that I planned on driving across the country and I had loaded it up with every spare key that I was going to need. After 2600 miles it was still in the same spot that I had left it when I started the trip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful! Well worth the money. I placed one of these boxes under my vehicle when I bought it 7 years ago and almost forgot about it. It has been through a deer decimating our undercarriage, many washes, winter in the mid-west with salt etc. In my moment of need ( I stupidly locked my keys inside my car)it was still firmly attached to my vehicle and it saved me the trouble of calling my husband or a locksmith. It was like winning the lottery! I will replace my old one as the magnets are rusting, but are still fully functional.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I can't open it!!! This thing has very strong magnets and I have never lost one because of this. BUT I have gone through 3 of them because I have to replace it after every use. Why? Because I have to destroy it to get it open. Is there a trick to opening this device that I'm not aware of? Shouldn't the cover just slide open as indicated by the arrows? Well, it doesn't work for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Here's the secret to opening it! To open, hold it with both hands, and press down firmly on the key picture with both thumbs, while sliding the top. It will open, and is strong and durable. The magnets are super.
