How do you re-bait a set trap without triggering it?

Asked by RatHunter July 26, 2020

Answers

You hold the back lever down and take a stick to press on the white plate surrounding the bait cup. (This reduces the chance that you will trigger the trap on your fingers) Re-fill the bait cup and re-set the trap. It would be foolish to try to re-bait the trap while the trap is set.

What's the best way to kill rats that are merely caught and left squirming in these traps?

My son kills them with a BB gun. It is quick and ends the suffering.

Need the trigger to be more sensitive. Any ideas on how ?

I had that problem with the mouse version of this trap but not the rat one. I started to put natural peanut butter deep into the well and then shove a piece of celery down into it. This way the rodent can't just grab it and run because they have to wrestle a bit with it and usually end up hitting the white trigger in the process. I now use this method in both the mouse and rat traps. I use like a half inch long celery piece, maybe 3/8th inches wide. I usually just break off a piece at the top of the celery where the sprigs are and then cut the other end so that both are fresh and juicy. Has worked well for me. Good luck!

Use more than once?

4 traps, got 22 rats with them. Cleaned them a few times and put fresh bait (peanut butter, tom cat attractant gel, + a couple sunflower seeds). I think the 22 kills wiped out a local den so I cleaned traps good and saving them if infestation returns.

Can I use it for field mice (vole) in my backyard lawn?

Am so happy with this product. Have tried for two weeks to get this guy that kept getting in our pantry. Even took everything out but cans and he kept going in there. Used 2 Victor electronic zappers but he kept avoiding them. Got some of these and used extra sharp cheddar cheese and a honey roasted peanut in the bait bowl and got him within a few hours. Peanut butter didn't work with this rat. Am extremely happy with this purchase. Have over four acres so have a problem with mice also. Getting ready to set those out in garage. Thanks Tomcat and Home Depot for the best price!!!

Cheap - Breaks after one Snap
Customer review from logo
Very cheap plastic latch that hold it back in loaded position. It breaks very easily. If the rat sets off the trap without getting caught it breaks the plastic latch and you can not reset and try again. It becomes useless and have to throw it away

I noticed a banana partially eaten. I wrapped it up in plastic to be sure it was a rat and the next morning it had clawed at it again. I bought this product and places it where the banana was with some peanut butter as bait. That same night, it caught the rat.

These Tomcat traps are excellent devices and I swear by them, especially for chipmunks!! I would recommend these for use on most any rodent. They are easy to load the bait and set and dispose of the carcass after.

It got the rat! Works better than other rat traps I bought. It didn’t kill the rat, so I had to crush him with a brick. 4 stars b/c I had to finish the job.

I’m a mom with 3 young kids so when I saw a rat and mice using my wall as a highway I knew I needed something that would get rid of them fast. Theses traps were so easy to set and within 24hrs I caught the rat! I was so surprised because earlier in the day I saw the rat had jumped over the trap I set on the wall. But having bought 4 traps it eventually got caught in one I set on the ground along the wall. I left the other three traps out and within the week another large mouse or smaller rat was caught as well! I used a wire hanger to hook on to the trap to dispose of the body. Overall soooo easy!

These are pretty simple and effective traps. You need to add bait, and place them well. I always choose something smelly. like peanut butter or chocolate. Place the trap along the wall as thats where rodents travel, and make sure you can get to it easily once it's tripped. There is a hole in the top of the jaws, so you can fill the bait cup with the trap closed, without risk. The only issue with this trap is that it doesn't always kill instantly, which can be quite upsetting for some people. You can drop the trap and rat into a bucket of water for a near instant kill, but the one time this occurred to me, the rat died before I could even get to the bucket. The sound of it getting caught was quite startling though. Definitely clean the trap very well after it is used. Use a q-tip to get every bit of blood off of it, or no rat will ever get near it again. It's not pretty, but it works.

Be aware, this rat trap is one-time used only, and not designed and manufactured for multiple use. I purchased two of those Tomcat Secure-Kill Rat Trap last weekend. The setup of one of the traps was super easy by just one-click but another one appeared to have some quality issue with the lock and I was able to finally set it up after several trials.I was not sure if it would work but still tried them in my attic. I caught one rat after several days with one trap and another one was triggered but caught nothing. Even the result is not too bad, but the sad thing is that both of the traps have been broken and then I realize by reading the review on this website that this rat trap is one-time use only. If you get this trap with decent QC, this works very well, but it appears to have some QC issue and IT IS DESIGNED FOR ONE-TIME USE ONLY. As long as you can accept it, it is not a bad product. I was a little disappointed with the quality of this product.
