What kind of preparation of the ground is there? Do I have to put them on a concrete pad? I?m doing a patio floating deck 8 x 13 how many will I need?
I placed each on a 12”x12” paver and would use 6 for your size.
I put these directly on soil that I had leveled and had them 16" on center - way easier to use than the old concrete block style
In accordance with the manufacturer website, all I did was level the dirt underneath the block. These take place of traditional footings. So the number needed depends on the design of your deck.
You can put the blocks on solid undisturbed soil!
Simply compact the ground and place appropriately 1" of sand on the top of the foot area and recompact. The footer sets on the prepared area.8 foot on center is the minimum if you use 2x10.

Does the Tuffblock hold water where 2x's and 4x's attach/set? Also do they work for 8x8 shed that will be 18" off ground using 4x4?
They appear designed to shed water and I haven't had any water sitting in them, even after it rained. We used them to hold 2x6 joists for a low, floating deck, but they are designed to also hold 4x4 posts. They should work for your project.
