About This Product

VELUX Sun Tunnel tubular skylights are a great way to brighten any space with energy-efficient natural light, and ideal for interior rooms like bathrooms, closets, laundry rooms and hallways. Many different options are available, so it's easy to find the perfect Sun Tunnel for your application. Rigid Sun Tunnels feature a highly reflective rigid tunnel that provides brighter, whiter light output in any application and are ideal for installations that require longer tunnel lengths.

  • Adding a solar powered night light (not available for all models) to a rigid Sun Tunnel makes it eligible for up to a 30% federal tax credit on both product and installation costs
  • "Flexi Loc" tunnel connection system makes installation quick and easy
  • Rigid Sun Tunnels come with 48 in. of tunnel length (2 elbows and one 24 in. extension)
  • Pitched flashing provides the optimum angle for gathering light from all directions and low profile flashing blends into the roofline
  • Flat Glass Sun Tunnel is perfect for developments where local ordinances do not allow domed tubular skylights because its sleek, innovative flat-glass lens sits only 1 in. above the metal flashing
  • Most models are designed to be installed on shingle and other low profile roofing materials with a roof pitch between 14°and 60°
  • Curb mount Sun Tunnel (TCR) sits on top of a site-built curb (not included) and can be installed on a flat or low slope roof with a roof pitch between 0-60°
  • Tile flashing kits are available (sold separately) for models with pitched metal or curb mount flashing (TMR, TCR)
  • High-impact polycarbonate dome is available for hurricane prone areas
  • Tunnel length can be extended up to 20 ft. with additional ZTR extensions (sold separately)

Questions & Answers

Q:Are the tube sections insulated for northern climates
by|Apr 27, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Pete, excellent question! You certainly want to insulate the base and use a vapor barrier just above the ceiling . As for the rest of the tube you will NOT want to insulate the remainder of the run. We appreciate your question.

A:  You should be able to remove the diffuser/trim ring by turning it counterclockwise. Finally the hallway isn't a cave!
Took about 4 hours total to install. YouTube is your friend. If you can install it straight down into position do that. A plumb-bob will help ensure your center points are in line or at least close enough. I would consider installing another in our master closet.

            Yes! Do it!
Love these lights. We had a deep dark hall and installed 2 tubes. It is as light as if I turned on a switch. Install was straightforward. We have a low pitch roof so we made some modifications to avoid ice dams. Overall, excellent product

              Amazing light
We added the 10 inch sun tunnel and it gives off an amazing amount of light. Very pleased and easy to install, definitely helped reading reviews about helpful tips on install.

                These things are cool
all in all, this was well worth the price. I bought three of these the week before getting new roof installed. I installed everything but the flashing, I let the roofers do that part. I have minimal experience in this kind of stuff and it took me roughly 1.5 hours per tunnel to cut the hole in the roof and ceiling and install hardware. this picture is with about 52" of tunnel length, and cloud coverage in the sky:

First, the good news. The sun tunnel is stylish and very bright. Now, the bad news. It is a royal pain to install if the roof hole is offset from the ceiling hole, which is almost always the case. In order to change direction you have to rotate the wedge-shaped segments to adjust the angle of the elbow. For example, if you rotated the wedges so that all of the wide sides were lined up on the same side it would form a 90 degree turn. The problem is that the seams in the segments are WAY TOO TIGHT and just don't want to turn. There is nothing to grab onto because it is a slippery thin cylinder of metal, which is easily bent and ruined. I spent as many hours trying to adjust the elbows as I spent doing the rest of the installation. My solution was to rip a couple of wood sticks about 1/4" x 1/2" that could fit through a pair of opposing slots where the clips attach. Then, with the elbow detached from the other pieces, I put one stick through the slots in the upper segment and one in the lower segment. (Click on image.) I could then grab each stick in the middle and twist the segments where I wanted them. It still wasn't easy to turn them but the extra torque made it possible and the sticks didn't distort the cylinder like trying to do it with bare hands would do. Also note that to really seal the tunnel up to air, dust, and water you should tape the vertical seams and the seams in the elbows (unlike what is shown in the product picture). I recommend this product only if you have a lot of patience and a very minimal offset between the roof hole and ceiling hole.

                    Nice product, poor packaging
Ordered two of these unitsa couple months ago, have been sitting in the garage waiting for the weather to improve before cutting into the roof. Just recently opened the boxes only to find that both had been damaged in transit to Home Depot. The boxes are both intact, however, the lenses are not secured in the box. One has a scratched up roof lense from slapping around in the box against the flashing (wrapped in thin plastic bag, no padding), the other made a large dent in the two foot tube section and may not be usable. The product itself seems like a nice unit, but someone really dropped the ball in packaging.

These are very nice, but the installation is not easy. My neighbors and I had 8 of these installed a week ago and our installer really worked his tail off to get these finished in 2 days. Not easy to do in our condos but the results are terrific. When the sun shines it's like having bright lights on. We also needed to pick up 2 foot extensions for each one, as the package only has one 2 foot extension plus the ends for a maximum total of 4 feet, which is not much from the roof to the ceiling.

I like and recommend the Velux 14" rigid solar tube. The actual assembly is simple and straight forward. However, it took me a good deal more than "an afternoon" to install it. This was due to conditions and not a fault of the product. The sun tube had to go in the center of the ceiling and an electric light was there. Moving the light required three new electrical boxes plus wiring. the rigid tube being 14" in diameter required interrupting and boxing out for a ceiling joist and a roof rafter. The house is pretty flimsy which required bracing from the floor below. I found this out after I cracked the ceiling. The roof is a low pitch which gave me a 2' crawl space to work in after I moved 12" of glass bat insulation and shoveled 6" of vermiculite insulation out of the way. The important thing is, the job is complete and my wife is very happy with the additional light in the kitchen and me.
