I put it near the back door with a nice ball of rolled cheese and peanut butter. At the beginning last fall, it was killing one every day for a week. Now I get one about every 2 weeks.

Safe for dogs/kids?

Yes, it is safe. If the child should pick it up and figure out how to open it, and touch the shock pad, she would get a mild shock. I actually did shock myself with it before accidentally when changing the battery and not paying attention. Shocked, but not seriously.

Living in rural mountains, we have plenty of mice looking for comfy places to move into to stay out of the elements. We never had problem with mice in the house - the project of sealing and caulking the entire house & every crack was worth it (some people may not realize that a mouse needs only about 1/4" to squeeze through). We have no pets, so it is easy to keep the house free of tempting treats for critters. However, once in a while I find mouse evidence under the crawl space or the detached garage, and have to evict them. I have used the "bucket and seed method" in the past and it works, but I wanted a quicker and more humane treatment. This trap was our solution and it captured a mouse on the third day in the crawl space. (I know it was a mouse, but don't know what kind .. I don't examine them closely). It is so convenient to just remove the drawer and dispose of the contents. Our choice of bait is safflower seeds which we got in a dollar store, very inexpensive (the mice love them and it is less messy than peanut butter). We do make sure there is no alternative food source anywhere in the area first. I like the design of the trap and it is well made. The two stairways have adequate holes on the tops. A nice feature is the "V" light indicator that shows red, green or yellow and blinks or is steady for each different status (as in pictures) and the status reminder is on the side for easy remembering of what each light means. The only dislike I have is that it does not have the option of a battery eliminator, I prefer the reliability of things being hard-wired. I will eventually convert this to a plug-in trap and keep it primarily in the garage. I was very pleased with this trap, and the Victor website gives valuable information and tips ("Rodent Proofing") for ensuring success in eliminating any rodent problems.

This thing is one of the best products on the planet, but I’ve seen some reviews and disappointments. I'm here to tell you that depending on how this thing is used and cared for, it will do a nice job and never disappoint. First and foremost. don’t put this thing outside because the product is designed to control and kill what’s inside your home. At best, putting the thing outside just attracts more rodents to the bait and if that happens there’s a possibility more critters will be getting into the home. Treat it like a bug zapper where the zapper should be at least 25 feet off the house not near the door... That’s where a few folks place it and wonder why they still have bugs in their house. If you have an attached garage, that would be the best place to put one of these. Place it a few feet off the back door or close to the main garage door out of the way from any obstructions or pets. That’s the number one spot rodents find when entering your home. As the instructions state, it should be placed in areas where you notice rodent droppings. If you don’t have an attached garage, the back door or the stairway or near the basement area are the primary places that rodents will be looking for food because most homes are built and set up this way near a kitchen. I’ve seen questions on mice in attics. Mice enter holes and doorways at ground level and if they’re getting to the attic, you’ll need to find out what’s attracting them to this area. If you find it’s a nesting area, call an exterminator a.s.a.p.. If you are experiencing a lot of kills, the maintenance has to be much higher and better as cleaning is a must for this contraption. I have a small can iof mineral spirits with an old toothbrush to clean the plates to ensure that nothing interferes with how the thing works. So if you hear any kind of humming or small zapping, that’s an indication that the bottom plate needs to be cleaned or needs to be better cleaned. I don’t power to thing with batteries because as batteries diminish, so does the kill power. I stay with the AC accessory for a nice charge for a good clean kill. And finally don’t load up the bait tray like a smorgasbord at some restaurant. I use a regular peanut with a little bit of peanut butter to attach to the bait tray dead center to make sure no food touches any side that meets those plates. If you goop it in, you’ll chance making the lower plate ineffective when the rodent approaches and makes contact with that bait. If the peanut thing ain’t makin’ it, mini marshmallows will attract with no problem. You’ll never go wrong with being familiar with the instructions.

I have always used Victor mouse traps because they are pretty much the only thing available that are electronic and humane, but at the most, half of them actually work. This unit has not caught a single mouse even though we can SEE them in our garage. We followed all directions and check several times a day. Save your money.

I have two units this larger one as well as a smaller one. Both were placed in a 9 by 9 room. The smaller unit was making hourly kills. I would hear The buzz I would check both units. I found a mouse in the smaller unit none in the larger I would clean out the smaller unit with white vinegar and replace it in another part of the room I've had both units several weeks the larger unit has not made a single kill. I do not feel the larger unit was worth the money. They were both loaded with peanut butter they're both placed in a 9 by 9 room different locations.

Not the best design. Making the mouse climb steps to get to the bait seems like a bad design and didn’t get any mice even though I baited it with the peanut butter. There are other Victor kill devices that seem to work better. The Victor Rat Zapper Ultra worked really well.
