I've been looking for a way to grow clematis without a full-blown lattice trellis, because the lattice would not look appropriate with the style of my house. My house has broad eaves, which presents some gardening challenges in terms of growing plants under the eaves - you can't plant right next to the house, as the soil never gets wet there. I solved that problem with this trellis by attaching the bottom connector to a piece of firewood, which I put about 4 feet out from the foundation so the trellis can be attached to the house at an angle and the clematis can get sun, moisture, and climb. I can also adjust the tension of the trellis by moving the block of wood in and out. I have other foundation plantings that can hide the firewood, but you could mount it on a nicer looking base stake if you had a more exposed scenario.
I found the assembly of the trellis a bit more complicated than I expected. The horizontal bars had to be pounded in with a hammer - a hammer is listed as a required part, but the instructions don't say how to insert them - and the connectors had to be hammered on to the wire, also not mentioned in the instructions. Otherwise, installing the end pieces and tension adjustment pieces was simple and this was 30 minute job.
