If I use this with a gallon pail of latex for a small project, can I easily recover the paint in the feed tube and spray hose? Or will that paint be wasted?
Asked by: SE111
The paint in the feed tube will return to the source bucket. The water in the spray hose would be pretty hard to save and is generally discharged into a waste bucket during clean-up. For small jobs, another paint method would save paint as well as clean-up time.

Here are some tips for other users: 0. Read all the instructions. Keep them handy 1. Watch videos of professionals using paint sprayers. They all have their own tricks 2. Mask off entire area. Make sure plastic goes all the way to floor 3. Get more paint than you think you need. If you think you need 1.5 gallons, get two gallons 4. Don't wait until the paint can is empty to start a new can. It's a pain if you have to stop in the middle of the job to re-prime 5. The hose is stiff. Unroll it before you get started so you don't drag it around the items you're painting 6. Read the instructions again for cleanup. Follow them and allow sufficient time for cleanup 7. Prep and cleanup is time consuming. Painting is quick. Make sure you prep well, line up all your work so you can go quickly, and allow ample time for cleaning the tool after you're done painting

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome for the DIY'er or the semi-Pro I recently decided to sell my home and paid a contractor to paint the exterior. Thousands of dollars later, I decided to paint the interior myself. I rolled 2,000 square feet of walls, but decided to paint the doors. Well, we had about 26 doors to paint. I brush painted one and knew there had to be a better solution. That's where the Control Pro 170 came in to play. The first door I brush painted took 3 coats and about 2.5 days with drying time and such. Then we got the Control Pro and setup a booth (cardboard boxes) outside and set up an assembly. the first door took days, the remained 25'ish Painted with the Control Pro took a few hours and only 1 coat. I SAVED DAYS, and saved paint which all equals money and time. The Control Pro 170 is well worth its weight in gold! I would highly recommend it. Pros: - Affordable - Portability, lightweight, easy to handle - finish quality is great Complaint: - None really. Only thing that bugged me was that one door of the top storage can't open all the way because of the handle. Doesn't really cause an issue, just an annoyance to me [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple Design, Intuitive Controls I bought the 170 sprayer this summer to complete cabinetry and masonry paint projects. As someone who has used the “blue brand” multiple times before, I am thrilled by the reliability and simplicity of the Wagner unit. I am thoroughly pleased with the purchase and highly recommend the 170 model for house painting projects!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This airless sprayer is light weight, easy to use, works well, and is perfect for my typical smal... This airless sprayer is light weight, easy to use, works well, and is perfect for my typical small home painting projects. I used an airless sprayer many years ago when painting office building interiors and entire houses, but 20+ years later, I have resisted using an airless in my home, since I usually only paint one room at a time. I assumed that an airless sprayer would be far too much hassle and too much of a mess compared to using a roller and a brush. This week I used the Control Pro 170 to paint my entry way (3 small walls and 8 foot ceiling). Here are some observations after using the Control Pro 170 on this project. --I chose the 170 instead of the 190 because it was 5 pounds lighter, and based on the specs, the 170 seemed like a better match for my small projects (single bedroom, small exterior jobs). I now think that the larger motor of the 190 might be a good choice, even if you aren't doing larger projects. The 170 runs constantly when spraying, and I was seeing some 'tailing' when spraying walls, even with the dial set at the max of 5. The extra 100 psi of the 190 model may help to get proper spray pattern in some situations or with some paints. --When I first tested the sprayer with water, it would not prime. I read the directions 3 times and watched several videos, pressed the "pusher stem" to confirm the inlet valve was open, but it just wouldn't prime with water. Wagner Technical Support was closed, so I eventually used my hose nozzle to force water into the suction hose, and that suddenly got the pump to prime, and I didn't have any priming issues again. So if it isn't priming, give that a try. --The airless sprayer with the 515 tip will apply paint surprisingly quickly. I recommend watching some YouTube videos of pros using airless sprayers to see how quickly they move the sprayer. If you aren't used to an airless sprayer, you will likely spray too slowly and go through paint much faster than you should. On my first coat, I emptied a gallon of primer and was only 70% done with the room, when that gallon should have covered the entire room. Since I was spraying white primer & paint on white walls, it was very difficult to tell how well I was covering the walls and ceiling, but based on how quickly I had used up the primer, I knew I had to be spraying far too slowly and overapplying. I had to go to the store and get another gallon of primer and paint. --I recommend feeding paint from a 3 or 5 gallon bucket rather than 1 gallon paint cans, and if you are spraying more than a few small walls, have at least 2 gallons of paint on hand. If you try to use a new gallon of paint, inserting the suction hose into the gallon can will cause the paint to overflow the can and make a mess. Instead, pour the gallon of paint into a 3 or 5 gallon bucket and feed from the larger bucket. --Priming the Control Pro 170 and filling the spray hose will cause the paint level of a gallon paint can to drop about 2". So a 1 gallon project is a very small project for even this small airless sprayer. It isn't really practical to try and recover the paint from the pump and spray hose unless you are willing to make a mess. --I strongly, strongly, recommend buying paint strainer bags. Even if the paint is brand new, there is enough debris in primer and paint to clog the sprayer. Clogs are very easy to clear, but each clog makes you stop and interrupts your workflow. I had at least a half dozen clogs in the spray tip with a new can of primer, so I bought a strainer bag for my paint, and didn't have a single clog with the strained paint. Always strain your primer and paint before using in the sprayer and it will make your life easier. --This sprayer does not come with spray tip extension wands, so I used the spray gun without an extension for my project, just to see how well it would work. It worked fine, but I will definitely be buying an extension for future projects. Without an extension, I had to stand close to the walls, and extend my arm fully to spray the 8' ceiling. Even a 12" extension would have helped. --Based on my prior experience, I thought that using the sprayer would result in a mess, but I was very pleasantly surprised that there was almost zero mess. There was no dripping and I only spilled a few drops of paint on a drop cloth while moving the suction hose to a new paint can or between buckets when cleaning. I intentionally wore a black polo and khaki shorts to see how much paint got on me, and I didn't get a drop on me--only very fine spray dust got on my shirt, and that easily shook off. If you have your work area well organized and are careful, this sprayer can make less mess than a roller. --Wagner's claims about the HEA sprayer and tips reducing overspray seem to be accurate. The spray pattern is very tight and clean and there was virtually no overspray. After a coat or primer and two coats of paint in a fully enclosed 10x12 room, there was only a fine coating of spray dust on the floor. It was much less overspray than what I'm used to with my inexpensive HVLP turbine sprayer. I now have no reservations using this sprayer in my house, with proper masking. --Airless sprayers are quite powerful and send out a lot of paint, and do produce dust, so you have to be very thorough with your masking. If you miss a spot or don't fully enclose the area being painted, there will be paint dust, and perhaps paint where you didn't want it. There are lots of great YouTube videos on masking rooms prior to spraying with an airless, so watch those and stock up on Frog Tape, blue tape, masking paper, rosin paper, and drop cloths. And be prepared to spend more time masking than painting. It took me a few hours to mask everything, but only took me minutes to actually spray the room. --Cleanup of the sprayer isn't difficult, but it is a hassle, and not surprisingly it's the last thing you'll want to do after a day of painting. I used two 5 gallon buckets, one to feed clean water and the second as a waste bucket. The hassle was having to run gallons and gallons of water through the pump and the hose until the water was clear, and then having to dispose the dirty water. Lacking any better options, I had to stop my cleaning regularly, take the 2-3 gallons of dirty water to the bathroom, and carefully dump it in the toilet without dripping in the house or bathroom. I am guessing it took at least 10 gallons of water to get everything clean. I think the Control Pro 170 is a great sprayer for smaller interior painting projects. If you plan on using anything larger than a 515 tip or spraying rooms larger than a typical bedroom, I would recommend considering the 190 model.

So far this product has not disappointed me. To date, I have run over 50 gallons of paint through it with very little issue. One of the main recommendations I can make is to keep a damp rag handy to clean off the spray nozzle. If you're spraying a lot of area, it will build up. Also, try different pressure settings. The book said to spray at a setting of 5, but I found this was way too high and had a lot of over spray. A setting of 2-3 worked much better and was more efficient.
