Can the sprayer be used for a paint that has an aggregate added for texture?

I am trying to find a paint sprayer that I can spray a paint that has an added aggregate to texture the paint but not adding too much thickness as with the textured materials. Basically I wish to use an off the shelf enamel paint and then add an aggregate for texture and spray them onto my substrate. Can anyone help me find what I am looking for?

Customer Reviews

Power Tex Texture Sprayer is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 112.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for textured ceiling repairs I decided to buy this tool after repeatedly trying to use the ceiling texture spray cans and also the stipple repair compound to do quick ceiling repairs. The texture left from those products looked nothing like the ceiling texture is supposed to look like. I have also used an old rental machine which was cumbersome to transport and set up, although it did produce good results when using the hopper on the gun. Before purchasing, I read a number of reviews that cast doubt on the performance of this sprayer, particularly for spraying ceilngs, but there were enough positive reviews for me to give it a chance. I have now used this texture sprayer twice, and I have to say that I am very impressed with the results. It seems to me that unless Wagner's product quality is hit and miss and I just happened to end up with a good unit, the negative reviews are the result of using a bad texture product, or user error such as not mixing the right consistency, etc. When I repair ceiling texture, I scrape the damaged area to remove any loose material and flatten the ceiling around the repair. I then apply a hard setting drywall compound and after it sets i give it a coat of primer (I use a spray can for small repairs). I protect any adjacent walls with a light duty plastic drop sheet and the floor with a painters drop sheet (there is overspray with any spray product...expect to get a little on yourself). I then mix the dry ceiling texture product (I use the 20kg bag of medium texture finish rather than a pre-mixed product) with water to somewhere around a pancake batter consistency as per instructions and spray the repair area with several passes till it appears to blend in with surrounding texture. Particularly if it is your first time you should test spray on a safe place such as a plastic drop sheet or large piece of cardboard. I found the blower stays pretty clean and the other parts wash easily if you don't let the texture start drying.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great Idea. Poor Execution. I purchased this with all the hopes in the world, after receiving rave reviews from other pros. I was not impressed. Pros- Super fast set up -Well though out ergonomics, positioning, modular system. Cons- Will not atomize medium viscosity bag texture. Meaning that in order to use this, one would have to use an extremely thin mud, thereby making matching existing texture near impossible. -Airflow is excellent, but psi non-existent. As the owner of DRR DRYWALL REPAIR, I look forward to the day that this type of setup meets the criteria for pro usage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT TOOL!! THANKS WAGNER!! ... GREAT TOOL!! THANKS WAGNER!! I am in the process of updating my home. Part of the update includes removing all the popcorn ceilings. Although I consider myself an above average DYI type person, I had never done knockdown before. After paying someone to do the knockdown for me on a couple of rooms, that I had already scraped clean and done the other prep work on, I felt I could probably do it myself, saving myself a lot of dollars in labor costs. I really didn't want to fool with the whole compressor, hopper, and hoses setup and was pleased to come accross this nice little texture sprayer from Wagner while researching the whole knockdown thing. I'll admit... was a bit aprehensive after reading the mixed reviews, but figured for the price, it was worth a shot. And if it worked, I would save hundreds over and above my original investment. I have to say, I was very pleasently surprised. It worked great! I did buy the dry texture mix in a bag rather than thining down the premixed mud as some people had suggested. Mixed it up to be about like thin pancake batter. I used the medium tip and it turned out just great. Although, on my next room I plan on trying the large tip for just a bit more texture. I did do as one of the other reviews suggested and cleaned the unit while waiting for the spray to dry enough to drag the knife over it. Timing wise... this seemed to be just about perfect. It took me just about ten minutes (maybe a shake more) to clean the sprayer and was very simple to do. This, I think, kept my mind occupied instead of standing around waiting for it to dry, and possibly getting in a hurry and trying to knock it down too early. I would recommend this unit to anyone who has basic DYI skills. Very happy with the $100 cost, the ease of use, and easy clean up. Oh, and the wife was very pleased with the results also... even a bigger plus!! She says she can't tell the differance between the room I did verses the one we paid a pro to do.

No excellent review only good, because I could not get it to work well on the ceiling. The walls excellent, you do have to get the mix correct consistence for sprayer to get the desired texture. I ended up mixing to a pancake consistence for orange peel, shot the wall once kind of fast movement, let it dry and shot it again to get the texture I was looking for. The ceiling was going for a knock down, it did not spray the best, could not get the right angle to shot it. I think if practice you could get it, I only had one ceiling to do.

I sprayed a 10 x 12 ceiling with a pop up and the results were not what I wanted. I filled the hopper full and it was ok to control for spraying the ceiling, as the hopper became half full or lower the flow rate lowered and it was harder to get the pattern I wanted. On a wall you could move closer if the spray rate decreased due to less material weight in the hopper, but on the ceiling you don't have many options.

This texture sprayer worked decent for walls, but it didn't seem like it was powerful enough to spray the ceiling very well. The spray pattern wasn't very consistent. It seemed to clog very easily also. The blower is extremely loud, so get some ear plugs. I bought this sprayer because of the reviews, but I think I'll return it and get an air sprayer and try that out.

I have used this sprayer to texture 2 rooms thus far and I am pleased with the results. It takes a little practice to get the orange peel finish down but if it is knockdown you are after, that's a breeze. I like the fact that I don't have to haul a big compressor around to maintain a consistent airflow. Great tool for the remodel or repair projects.
