Questions & Answers

after it dries how can I remove any of it to improve the looks of a sloppy installation?

Asked by: niagara
I worked in the sheet metal union in Cleveland Ohio and installed a lot of duct work and used a product simmilar to this very often. If we used this in a visible area and one of the apprentices done a sloppy job we put 2" Aluminum Foil Tape over the section to make it look presentable.

Is this rubbery and flexible? I’m thinking of a rather odd application - as non-stick bottom application on felted slippers. Do you think this would work?

I got this to seal leaky flex ducts that were installed in the 90's with duck tape (not the UL 181 foil tape for hvac work). I don't know if I got a bad bucket or maybe it was too new and hadn't set on the shelf for a long time. It was very runny and thin which made it messy and difficult to apply neatly. I left the lid partially open for a few weeks and the consistency was more inline with the other product in the green bucket you can find on this site or in stock at the other big box retailer. Also the packaging and the mfr. website doesn't indicate the product is UL listed. Save yourself the hassle and get the green bucket that is UL listed.

This product was fluid like water, it could not seal even the smallest gaps; it just dripped into the gap. I must have gotten a bad batch. There were no fibers in this sealant like in a typical mastic, and it applied similar to paint or stain.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not HVAC grade I bought a bucket of this stuff in a pinch on the weekend to seal ductboard as part of a coil changeout job. While I can say that it works, it is nowhere near what I expect from an HVAC mastic. It is not fiber reinforced. It doesn't coat as well as real duct mastic. It shrinks and thins a lot when it dries and turns an ugly tan color instead of staying white. It is time consuming to get a "nickel thick" application. I'm comparing it against my experiences with Carlisle CCWI-181. I'm going to have to go back in a few days and go over all of the joints with Carlisle mastic in order to finish the job right. I don't know why HD cannot stock UL-listed HVAC stuff like this. It's not like it cost me any more at the supply house (actually cheaper oz-for-oz).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Sealant Ever I used this EXACT product from Home Depot in 1990 when I redid my condenser duct work. I used aluminum tape at the duct seams and then put on some rubber gloves and hand applied this over all the seams. It stuck to everything, metal, tape, foam insulation, etc. My A/C drip pan just rusted out 10/24/2013 and this stuff was STILL stuck tight and STILL flexible. I used a box cutter and cut this rubbery stuff and pulled on it HARD to get it off. This stuff is still GREAT after TWENTY THREE YEARS!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This mastic works well I am using this mastic to get all the duct work and plenum sealed prior to blowing insulation into my attic. This mastic product works well to seal HVAC duct work and the plenum. I planned on just sealing a couple seams on the plenum but after checking some of the flex duct connections, I decided to seal every connection from the plenum collar to the vent runs. (Check YouTube videos on "how to seal flex duct ") This will definitely stop the system from sucking dust out of the attic and blowing into my house and will increase overall HVAC efficiency. This mastic works very well, applied with a 1" brush. Wear rubber gloves, gets messy. Water clean up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, but I DID get a bad bucket once! I'm in the middle of sealing my downstairs duct system and have already sealed the upstairs ducts. I'm about to have to buy my 4th bucket because my ducts have been THAT leaky (they're over 30 years old though...). This product works great with some raggedy clothes, an old paint brush, and some gloves. Apply it "nickel thick", cram it into duct cleats, drives, and take-offs before skimming and it'll seal nearly everything on the first application. I've allowed it to dry for about 12 hours (longer, if I can manage) before turning my HVAC systems back on. The very first bucket I bought was VERY dried out, but being my first experience with it, I assumed "clay-like" was the designed consistency. I ended up applying it with gloved hands because there was no way a paint brush was going to move this stuff. It dried, cracked, barely stuck and generally frustrated me as I had spent an entire day working it over my attic ducts on a hot day. I ran out halfway through and thought, "well, I'm already halfway through, guess I better finish and get this torture over with." My second bucket was a TOTAL different experience. It spread a little thicker than mayonnaise and went SO much faster. It even dried like I expected it to the first go around. I've just finished my third bucket and will be buying another to finish up the last of my home's ductwork. Learn from my lesson, if you buy a bucket of this, once you get to your vehicle in the parking lot, open the bucket up and check the consistency. If it doesn't jiggle slightly when you shake the bucket and look a little wet, just take the bucket back in and return it for another. This stuff worked so well to seal my upstairs duct system (along with fixing disconnected trunks, take-offs, using elbows to make flex duct runs as straight and pulled tight as possible) that I had to turn my blower speed WAY down and have my trusted HVAC guy correct my system charge due to the difference in airflow over the interior coil (I went through 6 different companies before finding one who had any clue at all about how to do his job correctly and professionally. MAKE SURE your HVAC company measures airflow through your HVAC coil and charges your unit using superheat/subcooling, else they aren't doing their jobs properly AT ALL.) After sealing with this mastic, my upstairs ducts blew so hard before the adjustment that they howled AND blew out tons of dust, dirt, and bug corpses (yes, my ducts were THAT bad) and I haven't had anything other than fantastic performance from my ducts since. I give this product my full endorsement (just so long as it's a good bucket! :D )

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor product. I used this mastic to seal ducts around the plenum of our furnace. It says that is can be spread using a brush so I used a brush. The mastic was so thick and hard that I could not use the brush, instead using my hands with disposable rubber gloves on. Like a clay this mastic balled up and would stick to me much better than the ducts. The next day I went down to check some other things and looked at the mastic. It was all cracked like a dry lake bed. Not a good seal. I would recommend getting Airseal 22. I wish Home depot would carry some quality stuff...
