The cup is designed to fit into sockets molded into the top of a step ladder. I don't think it would work with extension ladders.

No it doesn't have a lid. If I want to stop painting for a while (overnight for instance), I lift up the paint liner a little bit, put a piece of saran wrap over the liner edge and drop it back into the paint cup. That provides a pretty tight seal
