Questions & Answers

Do you have to have a controller ? CAn you hook a solor panal to a barrier without a controller ?

Asked by: Bill
No the voltage and current varies with the sun's intensity. The controller prevents battery damage. A battery is general required between the charge controller and your load.

Tell me more about the connectors and wire. I need to run the wires around 30 feet. Do I need to purchase two Female MC4 connectors and what gauge wire is the panel wire?
Asked by: jim
Jim, I have installed a total of 3, 800 to 1600W systems using these panels in Puerto Rico. The panels come with either 14 AWG or 12 AWG. You will need 1 male and 1 female MC4 connector. If pairing these with 2 to 4 panels, recommend getting the MC4 branch (Y) connectors. They make installation much easier and reduce the numbers of cables you have to use. I used 8 AWG for all my runs which are 20 to 50 feet long (you can purchase 8 AWG wire directly from WindyNation or at your local HD store). You will have to slightly open the internal metal connectors to make them fit. You may experience a 1Volt drop from the panels to the controllers. Using the WindyNation 30Amp controller you can expect 1200Watts out of 4 panels on a sunny day.

What would be the best controller for solar panels for a small 16 ft travel trailer?

What would be the best controller for solar panels for a small 16 ft travel trailer?
Asked by: Russell
As I found out, I need more than two of these panels to deliver enough power to my trailer which is about 16 feet long. My refrigerator alone uses 1 KWh per day and two panels delivers about that each day leaving no power for anything else. I need four panels, in which case the 30 Amp controller will still work fine.
