How many recessed lights will work on the one hub? Do i need Wifi for it?

How many recessed lights will work on the one hub? Do i need Wifi for it?
Asked by: Mike
Mike, I'm sorry as I did not answer the second part of your question. With the Generation 1 hub you definitely need Wifi. The Hub 2 can use ethernet as the main connection and then wifi as backup. You will however be able to install more items in your home with wifi (i.e., Ring doorbell and lights, Canary Security Cameras, Garage Door openers, Schlage door locks, etc..)

Does this product work over the entire local network? If I have installed wireless access points to extend the wireless router range, and the controlled device is outside of the reach of the hub wireless signal, but covered by the wireless access point for my network, will they still communicate, and work as advertised?
Asked by: Nick

What is the operating temperature range? I plan to put it in a cabin that is unheated in winter except when we go up.
Asked by: Don
That's a good question. I have one in an attic in Los Angeles and it gets pretty hot during the summer. I emailed wink and they responded "The temperature range for the Wink Hub 2 would be 32 - 104 F. " I ended up putting my hub in a foam box and using a temperature sensor and appliance module to turn on/off a fan as needed. I used a Wink Robot to automate it and has worked very well for at least a year or so.

Can you connect devices directly to the hub instead of connecting them to your router?

I’m asking specifically about devices who would normally connect directly to the router through wifi. My problem is that Routers have a limit for how many devices can be connected simultaneously.
Asked by: Matt
The hub connects to the router (wireless or wired) and then the devices are programmed to contact the hub.

I own the original wink and yesterday the local HD had a Wink 2 so I bought it right away even though I have one on order online. All I can say, LOVE IT. It took the time to turn on my Leviton Z-Wave lights from over 3 seconds down to sub 1 second, Almost like pressing the light switch itself. Similar improvement with unlocking and locking Schlage Connect locks. Impressive. Boots quicker, and took the hub transfer information almost flawlessly (details on that below). Challenges: Still buggy app. I have 3 Schlage Connect Deadbolt locks and they stopped working after the Hub Transfer from Wink to Wink2, I had to delete them and re-add them directly to Wink2 and they worked perfect since. Once I connected the Wink2, it required a software update which took a good 20 minutes and appeared to lock up at times, but it did not it. The Hub Transfer required a software update which took a long time and I had to reset the original hub twice as it locked up. but all went well.

I have lights, outlets, door locks, sensors, a/c and even the garage door. For the most part Wink has been a solid product. I’ve had some problems with loosing connections on light bulbs, but that’s probably because I turn them off by the switch sometimes. Well I finally decided to upgrade and took a serious look at what products are the best to use. I narrowed it down to Wink2 and Samsung. I decided to go with the Wink2 because of the 4 years of ownership and Wink’s support. Boy I’m glad I did. To switch everything to the Samsung system would have taken days as each device would need to be set up again. Wink simply transferred everything to Wink 2 and I didn’t have to do anything. I’ve seen some reviews that state the support is terrible. I disagree and was really impressed on how fast they responded. Both Wink Hubs needed to be updated in order to transfer the existing switches, etc… When I emailed support they pushed the update to me within 5 minutes, whoa! You can’t go wrong with this product but I would highly recommend going with Wink2.

My son who's an electronics guy hooked up my Blinds.com solar blinds to it both individually & as a group so I could open or close them all at once. Worked fine for a few dsys and then the group function ceased to work & he couldn't get it to work either when he was here for Christmas dinner so he's going to call their tech people. It shouldn't be as difficult as this.. It's also picky about wifi -my garage door opener app on my phone works from the lane but Wink's app tells me there is no wi fi available from exactly the same space

I had the Wink Hub 1 and migrated my settings to the Wink Hub 2. A firmware update was required on my hub 1 before I could proceed. It didn't push automatically so I needed to call Wink's tech support. But with Wink a tech support call is not a nightmare! They pushed the firmware to my hub 1 and the migration of all my old settings from my hub 1 to my hub 2 went flawlessly. My Amazon Echo Smart Home settings were still working as well. The second day I had the hub 2 I installed a Schlage Connect deadbolt. The hub 2 recognized it without issue. Wink did need to push a firmware update to my hub 2 during the process. I would expect frequent firmware updates during the first several months of an updated product such as this. I am operating my Nest Protect 2nd Gen Alarms, Schlage Connect Deadbolt, Chamberlain Garage Door Opener, GoControl Security Kit, and many GE Link light bulbs. The response times are very fast. The hub 2 is currently connected to my network's WiFi but once I move some cables around and put in a bigger surge protector I will connected this via the new Ethernet port.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from If you are a Hub 1 owner and are thinking of upgrading, know that the transfer feature is not fun... If you are a Hub 1 owner and are thinking of upgrading, know that the transfer feature is not functioning with no known fix as reported by Wink tech support. I have asked and opened a ticket to just know what their target date is for resolution and no response yet. What this means is that if you want to upgrade you will need to manually disconnect every device in your network from your Wink and then reconnect it to Wink 2 manually. Or wait out and hope that Wink can find a fix but not get to use your new toy until then. I am of course disappointed and contemplating the weekend I am going to have to devote to doing this the manual way since I need my Wink 1 at another house. I was told by Wink tech support that the problem is on their end in their server as the hub transfer process uploads your existing network configuration then downloads from their server to your new Wink 2. I’m loosing confidence in Wink, just having a hard time understanding how this is a problem they can’t fix for us.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hands down best do-it-yourself home automation! Had the original Wink hub and this is way, way more responsive in triggering actions and robots. I tried the hard wire connection to my router but later decided for WiFi since it seems to have much better coverage then the original. Migration was easy and took about 15min. To port my more then 25 devices and over 50 robots that control my entire house. Had a snag with one of my GoControl sirens going off randomly, which gave my wife and I are fit but after calling Wink support, they reset the device and all is perfect. Super easy and when you hit a snag, good customer service makes you feel confident when trying new devices. Devices attached: (2) Gocontrol wireless sirens (4) Nest cams (1) Nest gen 2 (1) Chamberlain garage door (1) Rachio Irrigation (4) kidde smoke/carb detectors (20) Link bulbs (2) Gocontrol motion sensor (24) Gocontrol window/door contact switches All work flawlessly and I highly recommend as this is the best way to go for home automation on the cheap. Search eBay and buy open box and large lots of returned bulbs and sensors.

It does not work well with an Android phone you have to turn your Wi-Fi off on your phone and it works excellent does what it's supposed to do but it just looks like an hourglass spinning up like it has no connection otherwise when you call wink they answer the phone and they talk to you and in-depth then they tell you it's an Android problem if they would have told me this up front I would have never purchased this product

However, the unit is not that compatible with different z-wave equipment. It does not recognized my SCHLAGE lock, my motion sensors, my door/window sensor. If you have existing stuff go with Samsung
