Product Overview

MultiScanner HD900 1 Step multi-function stud finder quickly and easily locates studs and joists behind walls, floors, and ceilings. It also locates metal as well as live AC electrical wiring. A 4-mode switch makes it easy to change functions, while the ultra-bright display screen, SpotLite Pointer, and audio tone all indicate the location of the target. The signal strength indicator helps to distinguish between shallow and deep targets.
  • StudScan mode locates the center, edges, and direction of wood or metal studs up to 3/4 in. (19 mm) D
  • DeepScan mode doubles the scanning depth to 1-1/2 in. (38 mm)
  • WireWarning detection indicates the presence of live, unshielded AC electrical wiring up to 2 in. (51 mm) D in stud and metal scanning modes
  • Metal scan mode locates non-ferrous metal, such as copper pipe, up to 1-1/2 in. (38 mm) D, and ferrous metal, such as steel pipe, up to 3 in. (76 mm) D
  • AC scan mode locates live, unshielded AC electrical wiring up to 2 in. (51 mm) D
  • ACT (Auto Correcting technology) automatically corrects common errors, such as when scanning begins over a stud
  • Backlit LCD display with target spotlight indicates the direction and edge of the stud and illuminates when the center of the stud is detected
  • SpotLite pointer shines an arrow-shaped light on the wall to clearly indicate the center of the stud
  • Zircon recommends the use of a brand new 9-Volt battery (sold separately), check the battery expiration date upon battery installation and replace battery periodically due to the LCD power requirements
  • Translucent base and illuminated V-marker groove for more accurate marking of target location
  • Signal strength indicator helps to distinguish between shallow and deep targets
  • Great solution for all your detection need

Find electrical Box behind stucco

Asked by Ollie September 2, 2020

I have mainly used it to find studs in dry wall. Select metal option on selector. It should be able to pick it up depending on how deep it is behind stucco. Also you could get false indicatons. Because stucco is nailed to sheating or whatever application your dealing with. While your going along you could be picking up nails. Be mindful.

what is wrong with this thing?
I don't recommend this product. Mine must be defective. It detects a stud when there is no stud, now I have a wall full of holes.

Hello Steve. We're sorry to hear your HD900 is not functioning properly for you. There are variables in construction that can cause a StudSensor to give false readings and quite often these issues have to do with the environment you’re operating on. There are tried and true techniques we can help you with that can explain why the tool is reacting to density changes that may not be studs and will also promote consistent scanning results. We would be happy to trouble shoot this with you, whatever the problem may be. We stand behind our product. Please contact us and we’ll figure it out for you. We offer toll free support by phone (800 245 9265) during normal business hours Mon. thru Fri. 8:00am to 5:00pm PDT. We also maintain a 24/7 interactive online knowledge base which can be found at the Zircon website. Thank you. zircon

This is somewhat of a difficult review. I gave it the 3 star rating because I purchased it for it's Deep Scan option, which did not work at all. If this is your purpose for purchasing this scanner, I highly recommend you do more research. I my case there is 3/4" drywall supported by 3/4" cross supports that the drywall is mounted to. The scanner can find the metal studs all day long. And it is accurate as to their position. But never once coule the scanner find the studs which are 1.5" deep from the surface of the drywall. However, for it's purpose of finding metal and electrical, it worked great. For this purpose, it's an excellent choice and I might have given it a better rating if it had worked for the project I purchased it for. Unforetunately, I have lost a day of work and I have to return the scanner and find something that actually works for the deep scanning.

Hello. The 1 1/2" depth is right at the limit of the HD900's ability to scan through and if you add texture you have exceeded the limit even if only slightly. The HD900 has MetalScan mode which can locate ferrous metals up to 3" deep and can be used to find the nails that are holding the cross supports to the studs.
You can use DeepScan mode to find the cross supports so you don't mistake the drywall nails for the nails used on the cross supports. Thank you. zircon

Great multi-function scanner but as with all scanners - subject to error. I recommend several scans of the same area to be sure you seeing what you suspect is there. I do have to replace the felt slide on the bottom (wall side) of the scanner due to some imperfections causing the scanner to stick to the wall and marking the painted surface. See photos of scanner in use locating metal support post buried within 1" thick drywall soundboard also electrical.

Not all garbage is created equal
Some garbage can be recycled, this product though will not cut it. I would not even refer to it as a tool. A complete waste of time and money, it gave numerous false positives when I attempted to locate studs through a 5/16" thick Hardie cement siding panel. There was no difference whether deep scan or regular operating mode was used. The siding panel was mounted on 6x6 PT posts spaced 8 feet on-center with a 16" o,c, 2x4 PT stud wall in between, this to fasten the panel per manufacturer's ESR. I wanted to locate these 2x4 studs using this stud-finder. This overpriced stud finder had difficulty repeatably finding the edge of the 6x6 post in deep scan mode, it would spew out numerous false edge and center detect signals for the 2x4 studs. It was giving these signals every couple of inches along the panel. Since this studs were exposed on the interior I had an idea of what the signal should be. I realized that this product was garbage, designed by marketing with bells and whistles on top of fundamentally poor quality detection quality. Frustrated by the false claims of performance.

Hello. Zircon stud sensors are meant for interior use only. One of the reasons is the variables in materials used in exterior construction such as the Hardie siding you mention. Zircon stud sensors locate studs by finding changes in density such as a stud behind drywall. Since the Hardie siding is denser than the studs behind it a stud sensor will not find the studs. You can use the metal scan mode on the HD900 to find the nails holding the siding to the studs. Thank you. zircon

This product did not work for the intended application I was looking to use it for. I was looking to install a SunSetter awning on the back of my sons house snd wanted to use this product to find the studs through the vinyl siding to add a ledger board. It did not work even when I used the extended depth. 3 different heights on the exterior and 5 different scans per height and I got garbage for output.

Hello Joe. We're sorry the HD900 did not work for finding studs behind the siding but due to the variables in materials and construction techniques used in exterior construction Zircon stud sensors are not recommended for exterior use. This is on the packaging where it states for "Interior Use Only". Thank you. zircon
