About This Product

Aquabar B floor and tile underlayment is an extremely effective moisture vapor retarder for use in a variety of interior construction applications. Consisting of two layers of Kraft paper laminated with asphalt, Aquabar B is a non-reinforced 30/30/30 duplex type Grade B paper. In the battle against interior moisture damage, the best defense is a strong offense. When you block moisture vapor from creeping underneath finish materials or reaching moisture sensitive substrates, you help increase the useful life and appearance of surface finishes. To help win the battle, the Fortifiber Building Systems Group offers Aquabar B as a great tile underlayment and inexpensive insurance to reduce moisture-related problems.

Questions & Answers

Can I use this under a shower pan to lay thinset mortar on
ByJan 25, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

You cannot use Model #70-195 underlayment on its own as the surface to lay thinset mortar under a shower pan. Thinset won’t stick to it because it’s designed as a slip-sheet/vapor barrier , a moisture barrier layer, not a structural substrate for mortar.

    ByDec 30, 2025

Can this barrier be used under Peal and Stick Water Resistant Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring?
        ByOct 30, 2025
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

We would not recommend the Aquabar for this application. It sounds like the project would involve adhering the LVT to the Aquabar paper only. Aquabar is used as a loose lay or staple down product. Using it in conjunction with Peel and Stick LVT could create issues. Customer Care

I am installing solid pine flooring over a subfloor that is multiple layers of barn board. My house is on stilts so this product seems ideal, however, I’m concerned if the house floods. Will this barrier allow all layers to breath and dry out after flood?

          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

No, as the Aquabar is moisture retardant but not waterproof. Customer Care

            use on vinyl tile
            ByAug 31, 2025
            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

The Aquabar is typically used under wood flooring, ceramic, and stone veneer as a vapor barrier. If you are searching for an underlayment for vinyl tile we would recommend our Sound Barricade model 70-197. The Aquabar may technically be used as a vapor barrier under vinyl tile but the seams would need to be taped securely. Please contact technical services at 866-435-8665 so we may understand the installation to better assist you. Customer Care

Can I put this underlayment between 1/8 tempered hardboard (laid on old, engineered hardwood (glued to concrete slab) to level it) and unpadded engineered bamboo floating floor? I like tempered hardboard over plywood as it is sturdier for 1/8 thick.

                1 Answer |
                Answer This Question

Aquabar is an asphalt laminated kraft paper used as a vapor retarder under wood floors and substrates. It does pass the CA01350 Indoor Air Quality Emission Requirements and is a NWFA (National Wood Flooring Association) accepted product. We do not recommend using Liquid Nails with this product. Good vapor barrier. Easy to use. I ordered two rolls, but only need one. The (oversized) shipping box was badly torn. Someone attempted to tape it shut.

Good product, don’t get it from HomeDepot
Ordered it with express delivery to finish a job on the weekend, got a damaged roll: banged up, filthy with dust and wet. Pretty much unusable. What is the point of a wet paper underpayment? Called customer service, they suggested I drive to the store for a refund. So just to be clear, I paid for express delivery, got a damaged product and your solution is that I drive to the store to return it… That means I paid for the shipping, wasted an afternoon and still have no product.

                    Damaged
Ordered online and picked-up today, they were not protected: the ends were damaged, smashed as if dropped, blackened as if moved across very dirty floors, and ripped. They were not protected or in any box whatsoever. I am very disappointed. I will loose many feet of paper and my labor, opportunity costs.

                      Creased and Delaminated
I bought two rolls of this for a nail-down hardwood floor installation. The first strip went down fine. However, when I rolled out the second row, I noticed that the product had lots of creases toward the center of the roll (presumably because the manufacturer doesn't use a rigid cardboard core to save money). What's worse is that the layers delaminated where the product was creased. This caused the product to make a loud crackling noise when stepping on the delaminated area. Horrible!

Thank you for your feedback. This information is valuable and we understand your frustration. In future, please do not install damaged or potentially damaged product. Stop the installation and return the product for exchange. This well prevent - loud crackling noise when stepping on the delaminated area. QEP

Great product, definitely use it for hardwood floor underlayment, but.. the last 25% is wavy and creased at the end of the roll, to the point you can't use it. It's a stupid packaging design that makes this great product so-so

Fortifiber was used in the dining room, rolled out onto a plywood subfloor that was directly above our "dry" basement. We used stapled down manufactured wood for the flooring. The Fortifiber rolled out easily, was tough enough to walk on and arrange the flooring on, made the floor quiet and did not rip. The Fortifiber was left out of the plastic shipping bag for 2 weeks before we used it and there was no strong asphalt smell then or now. Great product.
