What is the finish? Is it water-based or urethane?
    BySep 13, 2026
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

Hi there! Thank you for taking the time to contact us. The finish on American Originals® Tinted Tea Oak is a UV-cured factory-applied finish. Because it is cured using ultraviolet light during the manufacturing process, it is not classified as either a traditional water-based or oil-based finish. The UV-curing process creates a durable protective coating that is designed to provide long-lasting performance and wear resistance. If you have any additional questions about the product's construction, maintenance, or specifications, please let us know. We're happy to help. Once again, thank you for contacting AHF Products. Answer This Question

Thank you for your inquiry. The Bruce American Originals model SHD2500 is a solid hardwood flooring product. As the manufacturer, we do not recommend or floating installations for solid hardwood flooring. I had my Bruce Ginger Snap hardwood flooring installed in 2018. I noticed recently that there is a color gap between the area covered with a rug and the area under the window exposed to the sunlight. How to reduce the color difference?

            Answer This Question

Hi There, Color change is a natural part of owning any hardwood floor. All hardwood undergoes color change throughout the life of the floor and a majority of the change usually happens within the first few years. There tend to be more drastic changes in areas that see sunlight through peak hours of the day and naturally this can be compounded by contrast you see from areas covered by mats or rugs. There is no maintenance procedure to reverse the natural process of sun fading or patina the only way to reverse is to sand down and refinish. I hope this information is helpful. Very disappointed
I bought this to finish the flooring on my house. I had previously used another brand so I tried my best to match it. This flooring was considerably more expensive than the other styles but I was determined to make it match. After opening the packaging I noticed that several boards had some ugly dings and dents not to mention one of the boards was completely cracked and splitting. Because the box they came in was completely falling apart, and the store was over an hour away from me, it was very unrealistic for me to return them. Very disappointed and would NOT recommend this floor to anyone.

                  Hi there,

Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear you were disappointed with your purchase experience.

While we understand that the nearest store may be an hour away, store locations and travel distances are determined by the retailer and are outside of our control as the manufacturer. We certainly recognize the inconvenience this may create and appreciate your understanding.

Regarding material usage, hardwood flooring is a natural product, and industry-standard installation practices recommend allowing for approximately 5% waste to account for cuts, board selection, and natural variations in color, grain, and character. This is especially important to achieve the best possible finished appearance.

Because wood is a natural material, each board is unique. Variations in grain pattern, texture, shade, and character are normal and are part of the beauty and authenticity of real hardwood flooring, not product defects.

We appreciate your comments and will share them with our team. Customer feedback helps us continue improving both our products and the information provided to customers.

                    Buyer beware
We installed this about 1 year ago. Color barista brown oak. The color is beautiful and the floors look amazing. The reason I am giving this one star is because they are the softest wood floors I have ever walked on. If you drop a small phone charger, a fork, almost anything, it will create a dent or a scratch. We spent a lot of money and did about 800 square feet in these and it was a huge mistake. Everyday there is another chip, gouge, scratch. Pretty much anything you may drop has potential to damage it. We are 2 careful adults with no kids or animals and I am regularly filling in scratches. Unfortunately the compressions can’t be touched up and there are the most of those. I shudder to think of the damage a dog’s nails would do to this floor. I have lived with oak floors in various houses my whole life, so I understand wood gets damaged and I know what to expect. These floors are really something special in how easily they damage, it almost doesn’t seem possible. I have a runner rug that had a little stitching sticking out on the bottom along one side and it indented a line in the floor (the rug was only down a couple weeks when I noticed this). I won’t wear heels in the house because I am afraid it will cause little indents in the floor. Of note my mom had these put into her house in 2007 and hers were fine/normal hardwood, you can drop things and there are no marks. I am assuming their quality just went rock bottom between then and now. My advice is to pick a few different floor, the headache is not worth it.

Beautiful maple / salsa cherry with a few manageable issues.
5" Maple with Salsa Cherry finish. The finished project looks gorgeous. This was my first time installing 3/4", though I've done several projects with engineered wood. This was a bigger challenge. I did get some bowed boards (I came up with a method to force them into place straight). I also had an occasional milling issue such as tongues that were shaved short or completely off (best saved for the last row). Having read other reviews, I was prepared, but feel it was still a good purchase. At just over $5 sq foot, it's hard to beat for a nicely pre finished maple 5" board. I bought 460 sq feet to finish a 410 sq foot area. I had about 20 sq feet of unused boards left, so 49 sq foot was mostly scrap (leftover rip cuts, etc) and only a few boards I just couldn't use. I'd recommend if you don't mind checking the boards as you go and finding a way to install slightly bowed pieces. I also put down chalk lines every 4 or 5 rows to make sure everything stayed straight. Overall, I'm happy with this floor.

                        Unacceptable Defect Rate
I used this exact same product last year in another part of the house and it was fantastic and looks great. This order has been absolutely HORRIBLE. Splits, holes, shorts, burns (?), and one piece still had nails in it. I've already had to discard about 25% of the boards and rip out 32 square feet, when one of the board edges split. I have already re-ordered two boxes because it's been so bad and we have done less than 200 square feet so far. This is completely unacceptable, and I am very upset. I should not have to carefully inspect every board before putting it in, but I am now. My progress has slowed to a crawl and I am extremely concerned about future failures.

                          HORRIBLE PRODUCT
Ordered this flooring in June, Professional Installer arrived ( contracted through Home Depot) and began to put the flooring down. After it went down in the hallway the Foreman noticed the flooring was creaking badly. Issue was the milling, instead of the tongue being round it was cut off straight and flat. That meant there wasn't enough material fitting into the grove of the flooring causing it to move and creak. First order was returned, Bruce sent a second order and it was just as bad if not worse! Again the Installation Foreman refused to install this defective product. Where is the qualtiy control at Bruce? Obvioulsy there is none. Home Depot has been supportive and helpful, but we now have to wait yet again to order different flooring, this time from a different company. VERY FRUSTRATING.

                            Home Delivery beware!
Let me start by saying this review is based on how this flooring was delivered not the product itself. So we ordered a box of flooring to finish our bedroom closet floor and had it delivered to our home. We have used this flooring in other rooms and we’re satisfied with it. The pictures below represent how this was delivered. The 7ft box was cut in half and then there were 3 random pieces packed separately. If this is how Home Depot delivers products beware! Unacceptable!

                              Sample Color was SO misleading!
Purchased a sample of Brown Earth from home depot (in order to get a larger sample size for more accurate color depiction). Loved it and it was very similar to the colorof the flooring in the rest of our house. Ordered enough to do the two rooms we needed too. Waited weeks for it to come in, picked it up at the store, rented a trailer, drove it home, unloaded all 2000 lbs of it into the house and it is SO different from the sample. Having to load it all back up, rent the trailer for another day and drive it back to iur home depot to return all of it and start the process over again. Timed the entire project around this flooring, so it was ready to lay after we picked it up and now we are set back another few weeks while we try to find a better colored flooring.

The tinted tea color was exactly what I wanted. My husband put this floor down having never laid hardwood before. We get compliments on the floor all the time! I was surprised with how thick the pieces were and the quality seems really good—though time will tell with three kids!

                                    Looks great
Installed sugar white 5 in. as the 3.25 in. was unavailable, HD website showed plenty inventory available when we ordered but we received a back order / cancel email close to delivery date so we had to scramble and get the 5 in. one instead. Luckily supplier has this one in stock. it’s high gloss but maybe because of the muted color the sheen wasnt so glaring. Looks more like a semi gloss. Going to be easier on cleaning vs the wire brushed or distressed ones. Looks great hope it lasts long.
