Upgraded from Black and decker 10 inch grass hog. Like this better in many ways. Cordless convenience is great but even for my small/medium sized yard, I still go through several 4ah batteries (trimming and edging). Not a huge deal since I already have ton of Ryobi products and batteries. Really like the auto line feed and the foot pedal to convert from trim to edge. The extra length is nice too. Only real downside is that eye and leg protection is an absolute must (vs grass hog, you could get away without glasses (not recommended) and shorts.

Great product. I got this as a second one for my lawn maintenance worker so we each can work at the same time.

I had a 24v Ryobi exactly like this, until the motor died. I Liked it & bought another. This one is 18v. I can tell the difference in voltage. The problem w/ this one is the string comes off the spool at various times. A real pain in the rear.

Horrible at Edging / Good as a Weedeater
I bough this to replace mynold Nlack and Decker 40V weedeater esger. This works great as a weekes eater. Good power and battery life. The big progme is when you rotate it to esge. The twine breaks off up inside the cartrsige every 2 seconds of edging. I think the longest I have gone without openning it up to fish more twine out was maybe one minute. Even when it doesnt beak off i side it will break off with half and i ch hanging out bit never auto feeds. You hare constantly flipping it over to press the button to release more twine. I thought maybe it was just the small twine spindle i cluded so i bouvht a fresh pack of the Ryobi brand twine. Still have the samenissue. If I k ew I was going to have this problem I never would have bough it.

    Junk
The edger trimmer worked or maybe 12 minutes before edger/trimmer head literally cracked off.

The auto feed stopped working on the 1st use

The deflector assembly totally blocks the line-of-sight you need to see the 'cut line'. I've had to restart the same edge several times till I got the location right. Every time there was a change in edge direction, I went through this same problem. You can't see where it's going to trim! Also, having the deflector assembly rotate rather than rotating the boom assembly makes for an awkward change from horizontal to vertical trimming. I much prefer the Orange and Black colored trimmer. I'm going to take this one back and buy that one. For me the more expensive with boom rotation is the better engineering trimmer/edger.

      I hate the auto feed
I got this Ryobi set on sale for $149, which is a steal. I didn’t know what auto feed means, but I definitely know now. I used all of my line within 5 minutes because the line kept coming out each time I took my finger off the trigger to RUN the weed eater. Of course, I’ve never edged before so I took my finger off quite a bit. I looked up a video on how to disable the auto feed while still being able to do a manual feed and it works perfectly. A pain in the rear, but eh; still worth the money if you’re willing to do a little bit of tinkering to improve it. The battery life on both the blower and trimmer lasts a long time and I appreciate the dual function of being able to weed eat and edge with the same tool.

DO NOT BUY - NOT WORTH THE MONEY
I spend more time pulling, replacing line and line assembly than actually using it. It's OK as a trimmer but terrible as an edger. I still like my other Ryobi tools.
