Great results if you follow directions
I plan on doing a complete renovation on my lawn this fall. So, in deciding what grass to go with, I killed several 2000 sq/ft spots and planted them in different seed blends. Some of the blends were so called elite varieties that cost much more than this Scotts blend. I have been watering twice a day for 15 days and right now the Scotts is head and shoulders above the rest. I’m attaching 2 photos. The first one was right before planting and the second is after 15 days and the first mowing. The key to success with any grass seed planting is to top dress and keep it moist.

    New Lawn Area
Growing up as a kid, my father would only use Scott’s products. Now that I maintain my own lawn in my recently bought house I was looking to repair a lot of bare spots and new lawn areas after removing lots of brush and weeds. A buddy of mine was doing the same and bought 2 50lb bags of contractor grade seed. I was about to do the same since he paid much less than the Scotts brand. I doubted that brand and went ahead and bought 2 50lb bags of Scott’s. Needless to say my new lawn began to sprout within 5 days and full thick growth at 3 weeks, just in time for November. My buddies grass? Not so well. Grass came in patchy and then completely died off within two weeks. Super happy I listened to my pops and now have a thick beautiful lawn. I will be completing the rest of my yard with all Scott’s products, thank you Scott’s!

      Poor Germination
Followed instructions. Optimal weather conditions. Used Scotts lawn soil as directed. Adjusted irrigation system properly. Less than 15% of the seeds germinated after 30 days. Would never purchase this product again. Would not recommend it either.

I planted these sun & shade seeds this year to fill in bare spots in my back yard. This was at the end of April 2019. By start of June 2019 the seedlings were starting to grow but in patches leaving many brown soil bare spots. As the summer came and hot weather started with several days in the 90 degrees range, this grass seemed to stop growing and started turning brown and dying! The bares spots I originally wanted to fill in are again all brown soil and dead yellow grass! These seeds either were old and weak or Scotts claim is false. Do I get my money back for the 3 ibs bag I bought? I am attaching pics of before and after how it looked and looks now.

I love this stuff... I've used it in several spots in my yard where the ground was barren and dry and other seeds have failed miserably. But after trying this seed with proper soil preparation (loosing and thatching the soil) I have yet to fail. Wish it was a little less costly, but you truly get what you pay for. Would Highly Reccomend!!! Could never get grass to grow in my backyard due to several large trees, much shade, with a little evening sun and look what happened in just seven days. Put down some fresh soil and watered twice a day.

Bought this since I needed to reseed my front lawn because of chickweed and crabgrass. Wasn't able to start till late May, but did put RoundUp down and waited a few days before digging out the lawn. Waited a few more days before putting down the fertilizer, then I added the seed with topsoil. It did start to sprout after a few weeks and thought I was doing well. Lawn was progressing pretty well in May and June, but the weeds started to come back even though I put down the weed and feed. While my lawn is in better shape than before, I still can't seem to get the weeds in check even after spraying Weed B Gon. Still have a little under a half bag left and going to try reseeding in late August/early September.

We are sorry to hear of the difficulties you encountered with Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun and Shade Mix. All of our Scotts seeds are thoroughly cleaned and is 98.9% to 99.9% weed seed free. Natural soil contains thousands of seeds and when soil is disturbed, such as by rototilling, seeds that were deep in the soil may be brought to top of soil where growing conditions are better allowing them to germinate. Weed prevention should be done in early spring. We want you to be aware that we do back our product with a product guarantee. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to speak further about this. You can reach us at 877-220-3089. Scotts

            Worked for Me
This product worked well for me. I chose this for an overseeding project because I wanted greener, fuller looking grass. The pictures are 12 days apart - starting the project in July. First, I cut the grass real low and dethatched the dead grass with an electric dethatcher, raked up everything the dethatcher brought up, used turf builder soil to fill in some spots that looked the worse, generously applied the whole bag of seed everywhere, lightly mixed the seed in the dirt with a rake, and watered twice a day (every 12 hours). It’s not perfect, but it sure has come a long way in a short time.

Time will tell but so far it is doing great. Covered with a 1/4" of top soil and watered daily, grass sprouted within 5 days and was 2" tall a week after that. It has been 16 days now and it looks great! We are avoiding walking on it as the shoots are still very delicate. I am hoping that in another month it will be going strong.

I am SO happy with how this grass seed performed! I have used it to fill in whole spaces that were dirt as well as overseed. I did put a bit of fertilizer down the week after I laid the seed. I also sprinkled peat moss to help bring nutrients to the old soil. Grass grown in SE Michigan.

We are sorry to hear of your experience with Scotts Turf Builder Sun and Shade Grass Seed. Temperature plays a critical role in seedling germination. Soil temperatures for warm season grass seed must be around 70° F for seed to germinate. I bought this grass seed about a week ago. It's been planted about 3 days and I received an email from Home Depot wanting me to rate it. Here's my rating after only 3 days after planting.... It's been great! I've had to mow the grass I planted 3 time already and it needs it again! It's really green and the neighbors are lining up to admire it! I would definitely buy it again!!!

The seeds worked fine. I seeded a new lawn and I would suggest to use double the seeds mentioned on the package, or at least get enough to cover entire yard until it looks blue. I used the package recommendation and it was no enough. Also not sure but I am seeing one type of weed a lot every where, images attached. I dont know if its from the this product of the Kellogg Garden Organics top soil I used. the seeds germinited in 7 days and after 30 days I mowed the lawn.

This mix is amazing to fix my lawn that was damaged. I live in northern Illinois and applied it the first week of September. Didn't rain for 3 weeks and have had many days over 85 F and fall to 60’s at night. The dew from the temperature swing helped a lot but still watered daily for 3 weeks and the lawn looks better than before the damage just after 4 weeks. See the pictures for results. West side of my house that is under the sun most of the day stared to germinate in 5 days. East side of the house is shaded from the hot setting sun and started to germinate in 3 days and stopped watering in 2 weeks. I followed the instructions and believe the keys to success are: 1) Prep the area. I have thick thatch build up due from the burned lawn. Dethatched it with a thatching rake. I lost a few pounds doing this manually. Would recommend using a power dethatcher instead if you need to dethatch a large area. 2) Covered the seeds with light coat of top soil to prevent birds and chipmunks from eating it, or washed away from watering and rain. Though not too much too much soil, I think some seeds are still buried where I laid down too much soil. Hindsight, I should've tried covering it with peat moss as suggested by another reviewer. 3) Water. Very important. Just to keep the area moist. After two weeks, the initial germination reached 2 inches tall, but I kept watering for another week because there were still new seedlings popping up.

Despite some of the bad reviews, I went with this mix because it has a blend of seeds that are fairly easy to grow in the Midwest, even if your a novice. The first time I used this product, I just threw it over some raked dirt. That did not work that well, but I decided I would try it again for the newest lawn project to date since I did not follow the directions. The second time I used it, I followed the directions as stated with a metal rake first to loosen the soil, put the seeds down, used a leaf rake after to sow the seeds into the dirt better, and used some old grass clippings to lightly finish over the top to help retain moisture. After 8 days, I am getting very good results. There are a couple of spots that are struggling but that's because my sprinkler system doesn't do a good job hitting that area and I am not around 24/7 to monitor the soil. That just goes to show that it really is about how much water you can get on your newly seeded area. I planted in a 85 to 95 degree stretch and just made sure it was watered as much as possible. Manufacturer recommends planting at 60 to 80 degrees. That would be much easier temps to grow, but hey I had to get something down so weeds did not grow in the bare soil.

I really expected more from Scotts. I had several bare areas that needed reseeding. It was real easy to prepare, sow, cover, and water these areas so I was looking forward to some vigorous growth! I would say 25% of the seed I sowed germinated. That 25% looked great! I don't like to use Scott's guarantee but it's important to let them know how this specific product worked.

For the last month, I’ve been on a hunt for a grass seed that works for me. I did a crude experiment to provide some information I couldn’t find in my searches online. The attached pictures compare Scott’s Sun and Shade Mix with Scott’s Landscaper’s mix over 30 days. They were planted in the same Scott’s soil, watered at the same time, and sat in the same sun. After 7 days, the Sun and Shade had very little germination. The Landscaper’s mix was coming up fast, and was already much taller. But, 27 days later, the Sun and Shade mix caught up and the grass is a much nicer color and texture. Below are the seed makeups. The Sun and Shade has much more fescue and bluegrass than the landscaper’s mix. The landscaper’s mix is almost a lime green color, which hasn’t blended well with my mostly-fescue lawn. The gulf annual rye grass especially in the landscaper's mix almost looks like nutsedge, and it grows MUCH faster than the rest of my grass. I like the Sun and Shade mix much more, but it really has to be babied and kept moist. If you take care of it, it will come up beautifully. If you put out seed and pray, no grass will grow nicely. Pretty amazing product. After reading reviews, I ended up doubling the amount of seed recommended to be put down (I used 60 lbs on roughly 6000 sq ft). Other than that I followed the instructions to a T. I found it to be extremely durable. I live in upstate NY and the weather is always unpredictable. The day after I planted it, we got 3.5 inches of rain and the lawn sat underwater for a day or two. A few days later, it snowed just under an inch unexpectedly and stayed cold for a couple days. After that, I had given up on it and was going to lay more seed but my buddy who used it before encouraged me to wait. Sure enough, two weeks after I planted it, it started to pop up and came in nice and thick. It took a little longer than described but considering the weather, I wasn't upset!

I just bought and spread this grass seed last week. It isn’t a fair or true review until appropriate time has past. As of this morning’s lawn watering, no new sprouts has appeared. I have previously used this product with poor results, and a neighbor assured me that I just had a bad batch of seed. The guarantee was honored, so it wasn’t a big loss. If this current bag of seed doesn’t produce a lawn, I will never bother with the product again.
