Ok, it's April in Nebraska which means I cut my grass yesterday and it's snowing today so it's the ideal time to review a mosquito repellent device right? We actually ordered this for the upcoming camping season so this is more of an unboxing than a review. This device uses butane to heat a repellent mat to keep mosquitos away. the active ingredient is d-cis/trans allethrin. A quick web search of the active ingredient came up with the following: The main ingredient used in the Thermacell device is d-cis/trans allethrin. Allethrin was not created solely for use in the Thermacell device but was actually created in 1949. It is classified as a synthetic pyrethroid, which is a compound that is naturally found in chrysanthemum flowers. The reason we selected this product is that it is self contained, no cords to mess with just set it up and it's ready to go. Setup appears simple and it is effective after just 15 minutes.

An easy to use mosquito repellent for outdoor activities that really works. I first used this on a rainy day in Florida while I was out gardening during breaks between rain showers Mosquitoes in Florida never miss a chance to chew on you. As I opened the screen to the lanai I could see some hanging out on the screen door, and others swarming just outside. Yep, today was a good day to try out my new Thermacell mosquito repellent. Easy to assemble, just remove the lid to the liquid bottle of fuel and screw it into base. You get three mats and one bottle of fuel good for 12 hrs in this kit. Slide a mat into the top of the unit. The fuel heats up the mat to activate the repellent. You will see a light smoke come from the top after a few minutes. There is a orange light that will be visible through a tiny window. For me it was not readily viewable without having to pick the unit up and look at it at eye level. But not an issue for me When the mat turns light blue to white in about four hours, it means your repellent has been used up and needs to be replaced with a new mat. It is turned on by turning the base from off to on or start. When you turn it to start, it will snap like a butane lighter, then just turn it to on for use. When you are done using it turn it off. Very light weight easily transportable. It is good for up to a 15 ft coverage. So I can take it where i am working in the yard and be protected. There is no scent to these mats, though I did see online you can get in certain scents, like for hunting. HD sells four butane cartridges for approx fifteen dollars, the mats are 12 pack for approx fifteen. You can also purchase the usb rechargeable version of this at HD, which is good for up to twenty feet. So getting back to my use, it does work. Within about ten minutes or so I noticed the mosquitoes on the screen were gone and the ones outside the door were no where to be found. There is no citronella smell, so that is a plus for me. Comes in multiple colors measuring about 3 1/4 wide by 6 1/4 tall made of plastic, it would easily fit into a golf cart cubby-hole or divot holder as well. Great for picnics or camping. If not completely satisfied, you can return for repair, replacement or refund. The top does get hot, so keep away from children.

The Patio Shield Mosquito Repeller in Chili, Red from Thermacell is the best thing to repel mosquitoes that I have ever seen. I live on a lake in Mississippi. And the mosquitoes are defiantly a problem here. We like to sit on the open air patio and watch the water. That is till nightfall when the critters come out. I was skeptical about this product till my son in law told me about this product. Just insert the fuel cartage. And place the cartage in the slot. Follow the lighting directions and mosquitoes vanish. This thing really works. Enough said.

Time will tell, as with most things. My initial thought upon opening the package was that the design is pleasing in appearance. The build quality is good, made of sturdy plastic. Operation is simple, whereby a small pad is inserted into the top of the unit, then a small bottle of liquid substance is inserted into the bottom. Turn it on, and it's supposed to keep mosquitoes away. to a range of about 15 feet. We're not quite in the throws of mosquito season yet, so we shall see. A follow-up review at the end of summer will be necessary.

This mosquito repeller is a soft, pleasing color that looks great on my patio. The top has a black plastic grate and the cylindrical body is sturdy. Included is a plastic canister and more repellent that go inside. This is the prettiest way to repel mosquitos that I've seen and look forward to using it this summer. It has a 15 feet radius of protection so is perfect for my patio seating area.

I received the Thermacell patio shield mosquito repeller few days ago and I was pleased with the design. There are two sets of instructions to help with the setting that makes starting it easier. They enclosed three mats with a citronella scent and a charger. After it's completely set turn it on with a click and enjoy the outdoors free of mosquitos and a delightful scent of citronella.

The Mosquito Repeller works like a charm. The instructions are easy to follow and takes no time to put it to use. It is light weight and looks nice seating on the back porch table and we did not get bit one time when it is turned on. The cylinder that goes in to the bottom is very easy to install and replace when needed. We did not even notice it was turn on at all and I would recommend this 100%

Everything you need to enjoy mosquito free summer on back porch, it comes with everything you need to get going, fuel cell, mosquito repellent, its small and compact, has no smell,, no noise, just does its thing. They are available in several different colors, I chose red because I have in on my red porch and it blends in perfectly, so well you would have to search it out. I have it charged and ready to go so first sign of Mosquito and the battle is on.

Unit is attractive enough. Easy to load/reload. No noticeable odor. Needs at least 15 minutes after igniting to be effective and isn't really effective in breezy conditions, but then mosquitoes aren't usually so bad in those conditions. The glow seen in the little hole that tells you if it is on or not is a bit hard to see, but a good feature as there is no auto-off option, if not turned off it will just run until the gas runs out, and given the cost of refills this is not a good thing. Not the cheapest solution for mosquitoes but perhaps the least intrusive. As I tend to move around a bit when outside I will reserve this for use when I have company and will be pretty much in the same place for a few hours.

I received this larger version mosquito repellent in Chili Red color today. At this time of year in Western NC mosquitos haven't quite made their presence yet, it's still on the little coolish side. I was able to assemble the unit and get it working fully. It has a 15 ft zone radius, which should be plenty if you are sitting. It came with a 12 hour fuel and 3 four hour repellent mats. The thing I'd have to remember is how manys hours the unit runs, so I can get more pads. If it is slightly windy the unit might not perform as intended.

We have a woodsy backyard and a child that is super susceptible to mosquito bites. We love to be outside, but we need a good option for staving off the bugs. This thermacell patio shield is great. The repeller comes with 12 hours of fuel and 3 mosquito repelling pads. The fuel and pads are easy to install and change. The repeller itself is easy to move from one location to another as you move throughout the yard and does provide a noticeable decrease in mosquitos in the immediate area of the unit. This is a perfect solution for our family. We have several small kids and this brings us so much relief in the spring and summer months!

Although it hasn't been warm enough yet to enjoy this Mosquito repeller by Thermacell, it certainly looks very decorative on my patio, and blends in well with the rest of my decor. It is super easy to use, just insert the cartridge into the base of the unit, slide the mosquito shield disc into the mesh opening at the top of the unit, turn the base, making sure it clicks three times and the little orange light appears, and presto, no mosquitos. How cool is that?

Attractive little device that seems to be hit-or-miss. Thermacell's patio shield is worth a go; some people report great results, and others say the exact opposite - but I suspect all repellents work out that way. Simple enough to set up and use, uncap the butane fuel cell and screw it in place, add a "pad" to the top of the unit, then click from off-to-on-to-light (just like a butane lighter) and wait a few minutes for it to reach operating temperature.

I've running 2 of these on my deck the last two months. You can see them flying around but never bite us. Before Thermacell, we were messing cintronella candles, mosquito repellant and tiki torches that never really helped! Thanks Thermacell!

I'm very disappointed the mosquitoes arepst present

We love living beside the woods, but the mosquitoes can be brutal making it difficult to sit outside in the evenings. After getting quotes for those roll down screens for our back patio ($9,000 to $15,000... uh, no thank you!) and not wanting to install permanent screens, I found this little device and it has been a life saver!!! We turn it on (it makes no sound, no smell, no flame) and in a few minutes the mosquitoes are gone and we can comfortably sit outside. We tested it in cottage country last week and found the same result. It would be a great gift for anyone who enjoys camping because it is so small and lightweight to pack. Two thumbs up for this genius invention!!!

This small, lightweight canister sits relatively unobtrusively on the patio table. It is easy to light, and has done so consistently since I got it about a month ago. It takes 10 or 15 minutes for the repellent to start to fend off mosquitoes. It lasts about 10 to 12 hours. I wish I would have bought the larger repellent but for now this works well inside our mosquito-netted gazebo.

Apparently the new pads are supposed to be blue! Mine are white and don’t work!!

Love this product. Just used it on a motorcycle trip around Lake Superior. But - I have a few suggestions. First make the cap fit underneath, so you don’t lose it. Second, make it thinner so it fits in drink holders. That way I can use it on the golf cart and the boat. Don’t get me wrong - love it, and buying another one just like it (different color tho)

It works so well that the mosquitos and flies have swarmed our small, outdoor patio. They’re so enamored with the “repellant” that they land on the units and happily hang out there until dive bombing us. Unfortunately, we purchased two before we knew better and we are as immersed in disappointment as we are in bites.

This review will likely never be posted because I found therma cell useless I bought this 2 weeks ago and used it according to directions. After allowing it to warm up for 30 min I was quickly swarmed by mosquitos with them even landing on the unit. I do not recommend this product as it does not work as they promised .

Disclosure: Thermacell sent this product to me in return for an honest review. I paid for shipping. Otherwise, I received what looked to be a retail boxed product. The short: Overall, the new Patio Shield had a lot of thought put into the industrial design. Unfortunately, the mosquito repellency did not work for me here in Austin, Texas. Ultimately, that's what matters for a mosquito repeller. The long: I own the MR150 portable repeller from Thermacell. I've tried using it during hunting, camping, and on the patio, but similar to the Patio Shield, I still had mosquitos literally fly over and past the heated allethrin pad and bite me. There's definitely possibility Central Texas mosquitos have developed an immunity to allethrin; I don't know. I know many people who swear by Thermacell, so it obviously has to work to some capacity, but it hasn't worked well for me. Ultimately, this is the reason for the low score I'm giving this product. Disregarding the effectiveness of the mosquito repellency, the physical product is well designed. The top cover (lid): One of the best features is the removable top cover. The problem with the blue allethrin pads are that they dry out when sitting out. The Patio Shield's cover helps to alleviate this. But the cover is not fully sealed, so the pad will still eventually dry out. When the Patio Shield is in use, you can lay this cover upside down and seat the Patio Shield upright inside the concave space. An etching around the Patio Shield's base will help to indicate when it has seated level inside the lid, but it does not securely clip in and so can still be easily knocked over. Repeller pad storage: Another great feature is a storage space beneath and inside the Patio Shield where you can store additional unopened alletrhin pads. There are four pairs of narrow plastic protrusions where a single unopened pad can be wedged in and held out of sight. The space is small, so if you'd need some smaller dextrous fingers to get them in there. Would be easier if the butane cartridge is not installed, but having all four pad holders filled may make screwing in the butane cartridge difficult. Butane ignition check portal: The clear window to check whether the butane is lit or not is located at the top edge of the Patio Shield's cylinder shape and is large enough to make checking for the pad heater being lit is easy. Butane flow and ignition switch: This is my least favorite part of the design. While the rotary switch at the bottom of the Patio Shield is aesthetically nice, it has the same smooth slippery plastic as the rest of the product. Even with the two finger divots molded into the rotary switch, gripping and twisting this switch can be tricky if using the design queues to only use your thumb and forefinger. You'll have better luck by laying the base of the Patio Shield fully into your palm and place as much of your hand's surface area and grip onto the rotary switch. If you have weak hand strength or suffer from arthritis, igniting the butane on the Patio Shield could prove difficult. Thermacell could add some grippy grooves or stippling in their next revision of the product to help with this. In summary, it's a well designed product. I just wish it repelled mosquitos here in Central Texas.

I never leave reviews for products but this thing is life changing. As late April rolls around, even being outside for 5 minutes to let the dogs out before bed results in a few bug bites every night. This evening I fired the unit up and sat on my patio for over an hour at twilight; not a single bug bite! Refills may be pricey but I'll be paying for them. I can't speak highly enough of it.

The produce was easy to use and appears to be working to deter mosquitos.

Doesn't work I have to return

We bought one of these for our patio. We set it up and wished it would have worked to keep the mosquitoes away. But it didn’t. Save your money… it was a huge let down for me. I will continue to use my spray until I can find an alternative.
