Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to commonly asked questions

How do I know if I need a new water heater?
Several signs could indicate your water heater may be failing: water buildup in or around your water heater, water quality issues, or a reduction in the temperature or supply of hot water. An in-home inspection can help determine whether or not you need to install a new water heater.
What factors should I consider when replacing a water heater?
Your installer will help you consider the right fuel source (gas or electric), storage capacity (30 to 80 gallons available) and tank type (tank or tankless).
What is the difference between gas and electric water heaters?
Gas water heaters usually cost less to operate but are slightly more expensive up front. On the other hand, electric water heaters cost less up front and use less energy, but the cost of electricity typically makes them more expensive to operate.
How long can I expect my new water heater to last?
Some water heaters sold by The Home Depot come with a manufacturer's warranty. Please reference the product materials included with your unit.
Can I purchase an extended protection plan for my new water heater?
Yes. The Home Depot offers an optional 5-year extended protection plan on new water heaters. For more information, visit our Extended Protection Plan website, call 866-413-8201 or ask your Home Depot installer.
Can I install a water heater myself?
We recommend that you have your water heater installed by an experienced, licensed service professional.

Water Heater Installation

Water heating amounts to nearly 20% of a home’s energy costs. If you’re installing a new hot water heater or replacing one that no longer works, The Home Depot offers a full line of water heaters featuring the latest energy-efficient technology. We’ve got the right water heater to match your family’s needs — from standard high-capacity gas and electric models to hybrid, Wi-Fi enabled, tankless units that can deliver endless hot water.

If you’re having trouble with your existing water heater, schedule an in-home consultation with The Home Depot and let one of our licensed and insured service professionals inspect your unit. When your old water heater needs to be replaced, you can depend on The Home Depot to get the installation done right. In most areas if you call before noon Monday through Friday, we offer same-day delivery and installation within a 30-mile radius of your local Home Depot store.

From our no-obligation consultation to expert installation, clean-up and haul-away, The Home Depot is ready to assist you with your water heater replacement and installation.

Replacing a Water Heater

Once you decide to have a new water heater installed, we’ll deliver the new water heater to your home (within 30 miles of a Home Depot store location) at no additional charge! Then our installers will inspect the old unit and discuss any work required to bring your replacement water heater up to local plumbing codes. The new water heater will be connected to the existing gas, electric and water lines, and a test will be conducted to ensure the new water heater works properly. We’ll even haul away your old unit and recycle it for no additional cost! Our installers then conduct a final cleanup of the job site and walk you through the project, how to operate the new water heater, and answer any of your questions.

Cost: Establishing Price

Our water heater installation pricing consists of four components:

1) Cost of Product
Unless you buy a new water heater in advance and ask us to install it separately, any in-home consultation that includes a replacement water heater install will have the product’s cost included.

2) Basic Installation
Our installation process consists of several basic tasks: delivery of a new hot water heater to your home, proper disconnection of the old unit, installation of the new unit, and proper testing to ensure the new hot water heater is installed correctly. Depending on code upgrades required and the complexity of the replacement, additional charges may apply.

3) Permit Charges
Permits are governed by local cities and municipalities and are required to ensure that a local plumbing inspector is dispatched to the site as a third party to review the installer’s work. This should ensure the installation was safely executed and is in line with all plumbing codes and standards. Permits are required on most water heater replacements and pricing varies by state, city and municipality. Our installers can review the permit process and cost with you.

4) Bringing the System up to Code
A final inspection of the installation will be completed to finish the replacement process.
