Gather Tools & Materials

- Pendant light or hanging light cord
- 5mm cotton macrame cord
- Hanging bracket
- S hooks (optional)
- Anchors (optional)
- Tape
- Scissors
- Rubber bands (optional)
Cut & Bundle Macrame Cord

Begin with a piece of macrame cord about 25 feet long. Plan on about 10-feet of macrame cord per foot of pendent lamp cord. Gather and roll up the extra macrame cord on both sides so it’s easier to work with. If needed, secure each side with rubber bands.
Secure Macrame Cord & Pendent Light Cord

Work on a flat surface or table. Mark the center of your macrame cord by tying a knot in the middle. Then secure your light cord to a table or flat surface with a piece of tape.
Next, secure the light cord. Place the top of the light cord over the center of your cord, pull out the knot or remove the tape. Take the right side of the macrame cord and cross it over the light cord to make a loop.
Begin Knotting

Start making macrame slip knots to cover the cord. Take the left side of the macrame cord and lay it over the right side. Twist it behind the light cord and up through the loop. Pull the knot right. Repeat this knot until you’ve reached the desired length, making sure the light cord stays straight and doesn’t twist.
Finish Knotting

Repeat Step 4 above until you’ve covered the length of the electrical cord. Finish the project with a knot, and trim excess macrame cord. If your pendant has a switch, tie a simple overhand knot on the side of the lamp cord that faces the back of the switch, pull the strands down against the back of the switch and tie another overhand knot to secure. Flip the lamp cord back over and continue half knotting.
Hang Swag Light

When your macrame pendant light is complete, it’s time to hang it. There are two ways to do this:
- Install a wood or metal hanging bracket on a wall. Follow manufacturer’s instructions. Drape the cord around the bracket and let the socket hand down. Adjust the length until you get the look you want.
- If hanging from a ceiling or beam, you’ll need to use S-hooks and anchors. You can use small or large hooks. Secure one or two S-hooks into the ceiling. Make sure to anchor your S-hooks so they can support the weight of your hanging pendent light.
Add Decorative Bulb

Add a chic element to your new hanging pendant light with a decorative bulb. An Edison vintage LED bulb adds classic beauty and energy savings. Or opt for a crystal-like incandescent bulb to add bohemian elegance.
Safety Tip: Use a lower wattage bulb and make sure the bulb and the cord do not touch.
In just an hour or two, you can make a beautiful, unique light fixture. Or use the macrame technique you’ve learned to cover lamp plugs, electronic plugs and more. Macrame cord comes in a variety of colors, so let your imagination be your guide. Ready to create a macrame cord cover? The Home Depot delivers
