Start With Your Statement Inspiration Item!
Creating a statement bedroom that commands attention yet still has the relaxation vibes required for a bedroom begins with the inspiration item. This item can be a sentimental item, a decor piece that stopped you in your shopping tracks, a piece of art that brings you joy or a wallpaper pattern that simply brings a smile to your face. Not only will this inspiration object drive your design, but will also help create a color palette for your bedroom. This staycation bedroom was completely inspired by the soothing botanical patterns of a wallpaper from The Home Depot. I used the colors from the wallpaper to select furnishings, accents and even the small decor pieces to create a staycation bedroom worthy of a tropical getaway resort.
How to Shop Decor for Your Bedroom
Once you have an inspiration item, it’s time to develop your bedroom design and shop for decor options. When shopping for home decor from The Home Depot, I love to utilize the search filters to limit my results to the color palette of the inspiration item and a complementary color. There are so many home decor items available on HomeDepot.com and you may find yourself shopping for hours or for other spaces you want to decorate if you don’t limit your searches. Limiting the search will allow you to stay focused on your current design space. If you find an item you love for another space, just create a list within The Home Depot App or website and save it for later!
Bedroom shopping typically starts with the furniture. I adore furniture with a unique element. Something that can command attention as the bed is usually the largest piece of furniture in a bedroom. The rattan headboard along with the canopy frame of the bed had a warmness and grand effect perfect for a staycation. I took inspiration from the bed to select the woven walnut nightstand which complements the bed, rather than being a perfect match. Mixing furniture gives any room a collected look, so I searched upholstered accent chairs for the bedroom and found a velvety olive green chair. The shape of the chair also offered a break from the straight lines and rectangular shapes within the room.
Now it’s time for the decor! Pull colors from your inspiration piece to decorate your space. I found a gorgeous green glass lampthat was perfect for that staycation bedroom feel. The green and brown colors of the wallpaper were also seen in the colorful rug. Not only does the colorful rug tie all the colors of the bedroom together, but it also has hints of complimentary orange too. This makes adding those pops of orange color to the room easy as the color is seen within multiple places. I searched for orange colored decor to compliment all the green in the bedroom and found a cute plant vase that was just the right size for the nightstand.
A space isn’t complete without wall decor. When shopping for wall decor on The Home Depot App, I begin by searching a subject category that I want to highlight within the space. For this staycation bedroom, I searched for beach related art and found the best photography art of a beachy umbrella scene that finishes the staycation vibe.
Time for the Mood Board!

After the furniture and decor choices have been selected, I insert all my images into a digital blank page to create a mood board. There are several platforms available online to create digital mood board; however, you can also print out the photos of each item and use a piece of poster board as well.
A mood board helps bring all the design elements together and allows you to visualize the space. Keep in mind that you may have to swap out decor pieces that don’t emphasize your design. Should you have to swap out pieces, I like to start by glancing at two key areas at the bottom of The Home Depot App and website, the “compare similar” items and “customers also viewed” items. You can find alternative items that are still within the same category, but have a slightly different look.
Once you have all your items on your mood board, be sure to take a final glance before ordering your items. Be sure you have all the items required in the space and that your mood board has created the desired mood. If so, order all your items and pull your bedroom together as soon as all your items have been delivered.
Enjoy your space!
