Most people love animals, but not when they snack on your garden vegetables and fruits! Building a barrier around your garden is a must in order to keep unwanted pests away from your precious produce.
The Home Depot provides several gate and fencing options for gardens. We recently installed a Vigoro Rockdale black steel fence gate and attached Vigoro deer block netting over our galvanized steel welded wire garden fence. Here's a closer look at my installation experience.

Vigoro Rockdale Gate Installation
The Vigoro Rockdale gate is compatible with the Rockdale fence panels which are sold separately, or you can utilize the gate in an existing enclosure like we did. The installation process was very simple.
Measure the gate post spacing on the ground. According to the installation guide, the gate post spacing is 36 5/8" apart. I built an arbor to walk through at the entrance of our garden, so I made sure the spacing of the arbor posts would match what I needed the spacing of the gate posts to be.
Drive the two included ground stakes into the ground with a hammer where you've marked where the gate posts should be. Use a block of wood and strike the hammer on that, instead of the stakes themselves. I didn't use the ground stakes. Because our gate is mounted to the arbor, I bought 1/2 in. EMT straps, spray painted them with Rust-Oleum gloss black spray paint, attached them to the gate posts, and screwed them to the arbor. The straps are very snug so they may need to be tapped on with a hammer. But that snug fit ensures the gate posts won't move. We wanted the bottom of our gate to sit close to the ground, so before mounting the gate posts, I first verified how far down the posts needed to go into the ground so the gate would sit at our preferred height.
Hang the gate panels onto the gate posts by inserting the hinge pins into the hinge tubes.
Insert the two gate stakes at the top of the gate and push them into the ground to stake the gate into a fixed position. Pull up on the stakes to open or close the gate.
That's all it takes to install the Vigoro Rockdale gate onto an existing enclosure!

Vigoro Polypropylene Deer Block Netting Installation
If you have a helper or two, this netting is fairly simple to install. Simply unroll it, unfold it, stretch it out, and staple it to your fence posts. I used an Arrow T50 heavy duty staple gun with Arrow 3/8" T50 staples.
We installed our Vigoro deer block netting over our existing welded wire garden fence for an extra layer of protection against pests. The netting provides smaller holes to help keep out rabbits, squirrels, chickens, and more.
We love the barrier that our new gate and netting provides, plus the gate provides a nice decorative touch to our backyard garden. Protect your garden this gardening season with Vigoro products at The Home Depot!
