What are my mulch delivery options and how much do they cost?
This year, enjoy free mulch delivery from our stores when you meet a purchase threshold. Our associates partner with a third-party, delivering your mulch in a vehicle that matches your project needs. Small orders will arrive in a car with a $3 fee, medium orders utilize our vans at a $35 fee, and large orders come to you via flatbed or box truck for a $79 fee.
Can I pick up my mulch order myself?
Yes, you're welcome to pick up your own mulch. Even better, we're ready to help if you need it. After you purchase mulch in-store or online with store pickup, go to the drive-thru or mulch loading zone if your store has one. An associate will load your small or medium mulch order into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bagged mulch or bulk mulch, we recommend delivery.
Does The Home Depot deliver mulch?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a standard van or car for just a $3 delivery fee. Bulk mulch, also called yard or loose mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from store to store. However, you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
How much mulch qualifies for large truck or flatbed delivery?
When you're ordering huge quantities of loose mulch or pallets of bagged mulch, you'll get box truck or flatbed delivery. Most of the time, these are landscapers, serious DIYers, or Pro customers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
How do I get rid of weeds?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or a landscape liner to keep them at bay. Pull out weeds from the root in edible flower or vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snaps off without them. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator and thick rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't get in your lungs or touch your skin.
Is my grass dead?
It could be, but it's also likely just taking a break during those summer temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It turns crispy and brown, but isn't usually dead. Here’s how you can check to see if it’s dormant: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply and infrequently. Warm-season lawns need water every few days in the summer. Those lawns stay green if they're healthy. When should I water the lawn?
If you can water at least once a day, close to sunrise or sunset, that's ideal. When it's extremely hot out, twice is better. Watering when the sun is at its peak means much of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: trees, gardens, and lawns. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it if it's not the ideal time. The plants still need water to live, regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your lawn health, climate, and grass type, you may also want to apply a lawn fertilizer.
Should I fertilize my plants?
Once you've planted your plants or flowers, make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, citrus tree fertilizer, or general garden fertilizer blend. Follow the application instructions and don't add extra. Always water immediately after, as directed. That way, the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from the heat, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or a covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a shed, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn an uncomfortable afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.
What's a quick backyard makeover I can do?
Spending time with friends in gorgeous summertime weather makes the season even more special. Settle Into Summer
As we stretch into the dog days of summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more sun and heat than earlier in the season. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending, shade, and irrigation. Just like we can get sunburned, trees can lose their leaves prematurely, grass can get scorched, and plants can dry out. We can help. Lawn Repair and Patching
Scorched, or burnt, grass has an oddly shaped discoloration that looks yellow. It happens when a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn, or plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight. You'll discover it once you move something sitting out in the yard, like a sprinkler or garden hose. Car windows or mirrors can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.
Water scorched grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged by pet urine or otherwise unsalvageable, you must replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.
Whether you’re doing upkeep on your current lawn or patching the bare spots, keep in mind which type of grass it is and tailor your lawn care accordingly. Match the grass type to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if your lawn gets full sun, make sure you plant grass that thrives in the sunlight instead of a type that prefers dappled sun or shade.
Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're watering your vegetable garden, don't forget about the trees and shrubs. They may need less watering than delicate flowers or vegetable plants, but they can still dry out in the summer sun. It's easy to learn how to water trees and bushes — just make sure you aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and keep it from turning brown or yellow. Also, check for damage on your trees and shrubs. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery if you don't catch them in time.
Look for leaves full of holes, spots on leaves or bark, or a network of raised lines on the bark. When your leaves look like lace, something is eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from fungus to bugs. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, which are insects that lay eggs inside the bark and then burrow out after they hatch. Research and care for any of these issues as soon as possible, as a severe case may kill all or part of your tree or shrub.
Grow Your Own Herbs
For fresh flavors to accent your homegrown produce, add herbs. They're generally low-maintenance. It's easy to learn how to grow herbs indoors, but you can raise herbs outdoors, too. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll thrive in the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.
Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. Avoid a yard of volunteer herbs when you just keep them in decorative pots on a sunny porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which doesn't use soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of rock chips, sand, or perlite.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arched arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both shade and beauty. Choose vine plants that are native to your area. They're a good choice for success and attract pollinators. Grape vines are a classic option, but they take time to mature, so you'll have shade without grapes for a few years. Don't forget to match your vine plants to the amount of sunlight you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers with a delightful fragrance you can enjoy as you cool off in the shade.
