What planting zone am I in?
Check the USDA zone map, as planting zones have changed slightly over the years. Zones with higher numbers can plant earlier in the year. Up the odds of successful gardening by planting trees, vegetables, and flowers that are meant for your zone.
Does the type of mulch delivery affect the cost?
The Home Depot offers flexible mulch delivery options nationwide based on the size of your order. For small orders, we can deliver with a car for a $3 fee. As orders grow to medium-sized, we switch to a van for a $35 fee. For massive mulch projects, we have a fleet of box trucks and flatbeds ready to deliver to your job site for a $79 fee. Can I pick up my mulch order myself?
Yes, you can pick up your mulch in your own vehicle. We're also happy to help if you need it. After you buy mulch in-store or online with store pickup, go to the mulch loading zone or drive-thru if your store has one. One of our associates will load your small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bagged or loose mulch, you'll likely want delivery.
How can I get small batches of mulch delivered?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a standard car or van for just a $3 delivery fee. Bulk mulch, also called yard or loose mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from store to store, but you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
How much mulch qualifies for flatbed or large truck delivery?
When you're ordering pallets of bagged mulch or huge quantities of loose mulch, you'll be looking at flatbed or box truck delivery. Most of the time, these are serious DIYers, landscapers, or Pro customers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's usually a delivery fee and minimum pallet order. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
How do I treat weeds?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or a landscape fabric to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in edible flower or vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snaps off without them. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't irritate your skin or lungs.
Is crispy grass dead?
It could be, but it's probably just taking a break during those summer temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It isn't usually dead — just crispy and brown. You can check on it though: If you can easily pull out a blade of grass with no resistance, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply, but not often. Warm-season lawns need water every few days in the summer. That grass stays green if it's healthy. We have the lawn care you need for healthy cool-season and warm-season grass.
When should I water the lawn?
If you can water at least once a day, during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. When it's extremely hot out, twice is better. Watering when it's hottest outside means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you've got growing: trees, lawns, and gardens. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it just because it's not the perfect time. The plants still need water to live, no matter what time it is. Depending on your grass type, climate, and lawn health, you may also want to apply a lawn fertilizer.
Does my flower garden need fertilizer?
Once you've got your plants into pots or the ground, you'll need to make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose an organic or synthetic fertilizer to give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, succulent plant food, or a general garden fertilizer. Avoid applying more often than recommended. Always water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or a covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a shed or house, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn an uncomfortable afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that chilled air is ready.

That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending, shade, and irrigation. Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the grass seed or sod you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. Give it some TLC so it looks fresh again. Keep the lawn in check with a self-propelled lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around fences, sidewalks, or buildings.
Trees, shrubs, and bushes climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. They'll be growing fast, filled with buds and blooms before you know it. Trim wild branches to the size and shape you want with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave tree topping and major tree maintenance to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw for small trees and bushes.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
Much of your garden's upkeep comes down to balancing sun and water. You'll need both to keep plants growing and spirits high with summer flowering. A general rule when watering plants and flowers is to water the roots. A garden hose, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or drip irrigation system can get the job done. You don't need to water or even mist the blooms themselves. Many flowers wilt and droop when they get wet, but they’ll recover once they dry off. Succulents are, of course, the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific succulent types to optimize their care.

Grow Your Own Herbs
For fresh flavors to accent your homegrown produce, try herb gardening. They're generally low-maintenance. It's easy to learn how to grow herbs indoors, but you can raise herbs outdoors, too. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.
Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. So just keep them in decorative pots on a sunny window sill, porch, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of sand, rock chips, or perlite.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arched arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both beauty and shade. Choose vine plants that are native to your area. They attract pollinators and are a good choice for success. Grape vines are a classic option, but they take time to mature, so you'll enjoy dappled shade but no grapes for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to the amount of sunlight you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance as you cool off in the shade.
