What are my mulch delivery options and how much do they cost?
This year, enjoy free mulch delivery from our stores when you hit a purchase threshold. Our associates partner with a third-party to help you get started on your landscaping project by delivering your mulch in a vehicle that matches your project needs. Small orders arrive in a car for a $3 fee, medium orders utilize our vans at a $35 fee, and large orders come to you via flatbed or box truck at a $79 fee.
Can I pick up my mulch order myself?
Yes, you're welcome to pick up your own mulch. We're also ready to help if you need it. After you buy mulch online with store pickup or purchase it in-store, go to the drive-thru or mulch loading zone if your store has one. An associate can load a small or medium mulch order into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of loose or bagged mulch, delivery is easiest.
How much does it cost for a small order of mulch to be delivered?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a regular van or car for just a $3 delivery fee. Bulk mulch, also called yard or loose mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may get free delivery. That threshold varies from store to store. However, you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
What size mulch order gets flatbed delivery?
When you're ordering pallets of bagged mulch or huge quantities of loose mulch, you'll qualify for flatbed or box truck delivery. Normally, these are landscapers, Pro customers, or serious DIYers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
How do I get rid of weeds?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. Pull weeds from the root in vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weeds snap off at ground level. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for pollinators and pets — and wear thick rubber gloves and a respirator to ensure that it doesn't irritate your skin or your lungs.
Is my lawn dead?
It could be, but it's also likely just taking a break during those soaring temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It isn't usually dead — just crispy and brown. You can check to verify though: If you can easily pull out a blade of grass with no resistance, it's time to plant new grass seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply and infrequently. Warm-season lawns need water every few days in the summer. Those lawns stay green if they're healthy. Is there an ideal time to water my lawn and garden?
If you can water at least once a day, during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. When it's the height of summer, twice is better. Watering during the heat of the day means a great deal of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: trees, gardens, and lawns. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it when it's not the ideal time. The plants still need water to live, regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your grass type, climate, and lawn health, you may also want to look into applying a lawn fertilizer.
Does my garden need fertilizer?
Once you've planted your plants or flowers, make sure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and gives your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, citrus tree fertilizer, or general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. Always water immediately after, as directed. That way, the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from relentless summer heat, shelter beneath a covered gazebo or a patio umbrella. If you have sturdy structures like a house or a shed, make your own shade by attaching shade sails and awnings. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a misting fan or patio mister can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that water-chilled air is ready.
What do I need for backyard entertaining?
Backyard entertaining doesn't have to be a barbeque party. If you plan on firing up the grill, make sure you know how to clean a grill afterward. Many people simply relax outdoors or cook a meal together in an outdoor kitchen. Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the sod or grass seed you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. Give it some TLC so it looks fresh again. Keep the lawn in check with a self-propelled lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around sidewalks, fences, or buildings.
Bushes, trees, and shrubs climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. They're growing fast, filled with buds and blooms before you know it. Prune them back to better show off their verdant beauty with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave tree topping and major tree maintenance to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw for small bushes and trees.
Watch Your Garden Thrive

Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. Avoid a yard of volunteer herbs when you just keep them in decorative pots on a sunny porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which doesn't use soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of rock chips, sand, or perlite.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arched arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both beauty and shade. Choose vine plants that are native to your area to attract pollinators. Grape vines are a classic choice, but they take time to mature, so you'll only be enjoying shade and not fruit for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers with a delightful fragrance you can enjoy as you cool off in the shade.
