How is it for chemical build up, like rust and residue
    BySep 21, 2026
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

Hi Gene, The Marathon MR50245 is immune to rust and tank corrosion thanks to its non‑metallic design. In reference to chemical build‑up, it is limited to mineral scale on the heating elements, which can be managed with regular flushing or water treatment. For additional information, please contact 866-279-4566 between the hours of 7 A.M. and 7 P.M. CST. Derius

        Answer This Question

Hi Chris, Based on the information provided, the Marathon is reinforced, protected, and backed by a lifetime warranty because it has been engineered under confidence of the liner’s durability under hot water and chlorinated conditions. The failure mode of PB plumbing doesn’t directly translate to the tank liner environment. For additional assistance and information, please call 866-279-4566 between the hours of 7 A.M. and 7 P.M. "Significant" health risks? Just more internet spew. But who drinks or otherwise consumes hot water? Even when rinsing after brushing teeth, people spit out the water. You should never use hot water to get a head start on cooking.

                        So far pretty impressed
My last AO Smith rusted though the top element hole after 7 years. I even changed the anode rode every year, probably would have needed to be done more frequently. I wanted to try these plastic tanks and see if they last long then my last few metal tanks. So far I'm impressed with the construction and the install was a breeze.

Quality control at the factory would be nice, I used Home Depot services (big mistake) and after it was hooked up for 1500 with only 1 hour labor the heater leaked the heat element needed to be tightened that was all but the scam service tech was overwhemed thinking to turn a nut a half turn should be another 1500 labor. This is a part that is replaceable if heat element goes. should have had the tool just a big socket 2.25 inch. or channel locks thin ones would work, so the home depot service men disconnected it and took the parts for water hookup, and charged me 1500 to not install a hot water heater said i must return, Store was great with taking it back but you have to order a new one online, maybe because i am old, customer service is out window the home depot service guys could not bring back either i had to huff it in car and return myself So lesson learned never use home depot services and make sure who ever installs you buy from them so if a issue they can take back and hook up one for agreed price not double.

The water heater was what I expected. Installing the heater went smoothly. The directions were clear and the plumber was able to put the heater in place and get things hooked up without any issues. In my case, an expansion tank (2 gal) was recommended and installed. A quick DYI bracket helped keep it stable. Seems to be working well and hope the extra costs will be worth it in the long run.

Home Depot for the win, Rheem on the other hand?
Purchased this tank online from Home Depot two months ago. Finally got around to installing it only to feel na that the drain valve leaked and appeared to be tampered with before shipping. Installation was time sensitive but Rheem delayed reply then told me they would replace it and adhere to the warranty date of purchase two months ago. By the time Rheem replied Home Depot took a return and we repurchased giving us a new warranty date. Hoping I don’t have to deal with Rheem again

                                AVOID! Leaked Immediately.
Had a licensed professional plumber (who I've used successfully on other projects) install this unit and on turning on the water supply and shortly after the tank initially filled it leaked from the top and bottom. Dead on arrival. Totally defective. Where is the quality control at Rheem? A simple pressure test would have indicated an issue. And now? I'm on the hook for service fees. Returned and followed my plumbers advice to install a Bradford White. Learn from my story and seek out a different brand that actually invests in quality control over profits.

I replaced my old Rheem water heater with this Rheem marathon model. My old unit was built and installed in my home back in 1985. After 40 years, with little or no maintenance, I decided to replace the old unit with a new marathon unit. I choose the marathon because it does not have a metal tank or anode to rust out and require replacement in 8 - 10 years. Install was easy with no issues.
