Answer This Question

No good.

This caliper is reliable and works as advertised. In terms of durability, it holds up to normal wear and tear.

    By|Mar 4, 2020

      Yes, this item is durable.

      By|Mar 4, 2020

It is nylon vs metal but pretty sturdy. Seems to repeat nicely. I'd still recheck the "0" each time I use it. There is a "0" adjustment. Don't overpower the thumb wheel.

Yes it zeroes reliably. The dial face can be rotated to re zero the calipers. The black plastic is strong and durable.

This General Tools is a non-metal plastic dial calipers is for the DIY’s. It is made of fiberglass reinforced nylon. It can measure 4 different way; outside, inside, depth and step. It has a free-wheeling thumb roller with friction stop so you move the scale more open or close. It measures down to 1/1000 or 0.001inch. The scale is easy to read. It does come with instructions how to read the scale. A nice product.

With this caliper you can measure inside, outside, depth and step to 0.001 in. I found it works well at making these measurements and would work well for most hobby types. It does have a nice holder that can be hung on a peg board or on the wall. It is accurate, but it would probably not meet the needs of someone working in a metal shop. However, I did have a couple of issues with this caliper. First it does not have a way of locking the caliper to hold the measurement in place should you need to take it to the other side of the shop. In addition, I found that changing the zero setting (something you will most likely need to do when making a depth measurement) is not exactly straight forward. The black knurled extension that is part of the dial mechanism is used to change the zero setting. It is locked in placed and requires that you lift it away from the yellow base it is setting on to get it to rotate and there is no way to lock the new zero in place. With these two issues along with the price, I can only give the tool three stars.

This six inch single rotation dial caliper will measure both outside and inside dimensions with an accuracy to .001 inch, As the gauge moves in and out, the mechanical dial is synchronized to the linear scale, making it simple to read inches and millimeters in decimal form. This caliper can also measure the depth of rabbets, dadoes, etc.,utilizing a movable pin on the end of the gauge, also synchronized with the dial. This is a welcome deice in our toolbox.

This caliper is different in that the needle spins 10 times per inch of movement. Other plastic calipers only spin one time per inch of movement. Overall length of the calipers is 8-7/8 inches long when I measured with my tape measure. On the back there is a handy Decimal Equivalents table label. I was disappointed to see that the label was mounted crooked with a corner hanging off of the edge of the tool. I was able to safely remove the label by warming it with a heat gun. I used a permanent mount glue stick to reattach the label.

General Tools 6 in. Single Rotation Dial Caliper General Tools Plastic Dial Calipers offer precision measurements . This thousandths-reading caliper features accurate readings of inside, outside, depth and step measurements. The slide is easily moved ed with a thumb roller and the 6 in. bar scale is marked with 1/10 in. and 1 mm graduations for guaranteed accuracy. I'm not a math genius so it took me a little while to figure out how to use it and I even watched a couple of videos to explain it better. It is all plastic but seems to be built well. It should last along time.

I recently obtained a small wood lathe and I wanted an inexpensive Dial Caliper to measure the outside diameters of spindles I plan to turn. I plan to also measure depths of shallow bowls I will eventually turn. I will also use the calipers to measure the inside diameter of shoulders on these small bowls or nested cylinders. The “General” Caliper will measure to within a thousandth of an inch which is plenty accurate for this work. The General Caliper can measure up to a 6-inch diameter. Although the calipers are plastic, the gear teeth to move the dial readout work well without skipping. For large adjustments the slide is easily advanced due to the retracted and free-wheeling thumb roller. I’m very pleased with the “General” dial calipers and should be able to get many years of use from them.

I finally broke down and got a caliper that has an easy to read dial instead of my old vernier caliper. The vernier woks fine but every time you use it you have to squint at the vernier and add everything up. The direct reading dial is much faster and less prone to error. I down rated this to four stars for two reasons. The biggest is that the dial is not marked in metric units along with the English units. The caliper is marked in millimeters but the smallest division is one mm. It would have been ever so easy to mark the dial in both systems since almost everything these days is hard metric. The other minor issue is the lack of any kind of protective case or sleeve. Since this unit is plastic that is important.

Six Inch Dial Calipers. Unit is mainly made of nylon vs metal. Can measure inside, outside, step and depth. Measurements are in mm and inches (10ths). Dial is in .001 increments. To move the prongs, use the thump wheel. You need to press it in to operate it. Nice instructions. The package has a nice plastic backing that can be used to store the calipers on a pegboard. You need to complete the hole in the paper front to match the hole in the backing. I'd recheck your "0" each time you use it just to make sure your measurement is accurate. There is a "0" adjustment on the dial.
