This is the wrong tool for that. Hit YouTube to find out how to measure or how to find the "Top Dead Center" which is want you are needing to find. The answers should show you what tools you can use.

No. Three buttons are self explaining. If you can’t operate them with them. Maybe buy manual ones..

I bought this but was wondering what the extra spot in the case was for.

I was wondering the same thing. It's not for the battery as some suggest. There is a circular holder in the case, up near where the jaws of the calipers go, that the extra battery fits into. Maybe it's for a drawing compass, or some other tool that Husky makes, and rather than design a whole new case they just give you this one with the extra spot.

In the few weeks I've had them, these calipers helped me to get the exact measurements-decimals in inches and millimeters-that I otherwise couldn't get with a ruler. These are measurements I need as an architecture student building scale models. No issues as of yet.

Measure Twice, Cut Once
We’ve all heard the saying “measure twice, cut once” a thousand times since we were children. If you haven’t heard it before, then you should have because it’s true. And one of the most basic and essential tools to have in your garage repertoire is the caliper. Living in this computerized age we now have digital calipers. There are endless applications for this tool and I use it frequently for precise small measurements. First off, the digital readout screen is extremely clear and easy to read. The 3 mode setting allows you to read the measurement in inches (decimals), inches (fractions), and millimeters. The smooth slide action of this caliper is appreciated but it is also tight enough not to slip around. It feels well-made and durable. Calibrating the caliper is also easy enough with just a press of a button to reset the 0 mark. Like any other caliper, you can use the inner grips to measure the outer width of a piece of wood per se, or the outer grips to measure the inner diameter of a conduit pipe. The included carrying case and extra battery are a welcome addition to the tool as well.

Super Accurate, Easy To Read
This is one of the best digital calipers that I have ever used. Its highly accurate and very easy to read. This is very accurate, when I tested these on a set of machined parallels they measured down to the ten thousands on four different sizes of parallels. From 3/8" to 7/8" the measurement was perfect. Even when measuring the machined parallels on the long side they measured right at 3.5000". Depth measurement is just as accurate with these calipers. The readout is nice and large and very easy to read in all three modes and from all angles. The modes are very handy and make reading measurements easy for anyone. Almost everyone feels comfortable using fractions of an inch, now you can change from fractions to decimals to millimeters on the fly. The calipers are very smooth and easy to operate. The calipers are easy to lock in place with the set screw, to hold your last measurement or vary the resistance of the slide. These are a great addition to everyone's toolbox.

Perfect for very accurate measurement in metric or standard!
Have you ever tried to convert mm to fractions or tenths of an inch or the other way...well with this instrument it will measure and convert in any of 3 modes! The LCD is easy to read and the control buttons are placed right where you'd want them to be too! It will measure both inside and outside dimensions too. And it also does depth measurements...it does it all! Very accurate too 0.001 inch or 0.03mm. It comes with the battery ready to go and also a nice protective carry case with room for spare batteries inside. This measuring instrument is going to come in handy like for instance have you ever tried to measure the outside or inside diameter of a pipe with a tape measure? Not the most accurate way compared to the results you will get with this tool!

Precision Digital Calipers
Husky 5 in. High Contrast Vernier Caliper is a good one at a reasonable price and makes quick work of taking accurate measurements. It calculates both the I.D. And O.D. of objects as well as depth lengths depending on how you use it. It has a knurled knob, beam clamp screw, on the top to lock a setting in so you have it for reference to go back and recheck your work or take it to another piece. Its both a standard vernier caliper (ruler markings) and a digital one with a battery operated display readout device to the tool. A neat feature is the readout shows decimals, millimeters and fractions, too. The tool works off an LR44 battery and displays a changing reading as you slide the larger thumb rest and roller knob underneath the tool. It can be re-zeroed at anytime you are using it. Th thumb rest knob is used to close the jaws when starting and then as you move the knob the caliper opens and the digital device tracks the change. I found the tool returns to zero when closed, but it has a re-zeroing in button. The unit is sturdy made of Stainless Steel is a precision instrument and care should be used along with returning it to the plastic case it comes with when not used. Some reviewers said the readings were jumping around and this is common with precision calipers because they measure such small distances. Excess jumping could be a weak battery even if the display is showing brightly. Batteries are cheap and can be checked by popping in a fresh one. Jaws should be checked for oil from your hand and wiped with alcohol if the readings vary, too. These things will cause the digital display to give slightly different readings. Finally, check that you are applying constant pressure when closing the tool. Precision tools need practice to eliminate human variation. My caliper didn't display any of these problems, there was no play or slop in the beam slide mechanism. I went ahead and made several test measurements from known items. I found the calipers to be very accurate.

Works well
This caliper is capable of measuring up to 6". Being able to choose from 3 different measurement modes is fantastic! It has a "zero" button is something gets messed up. It slides easy & the adjustment wheel is easy to work with. It has a thumb screw on top to lock your measurement. Now for the fantastic things about this... It comes with an extra battery & a case! I don't have to worry about it falling off of a workbench or something else falling on it while I am away. My only complaint is that the battery cover has two prongs which help hold it on. Well one of those was broken when I opened it for the first time. It was in the case so I'm guessing the QA is not great in the factory.
