Product Overview

  • Does not warp or split and does not expand and contract
  • Ideal for cabinet dividers, drawer backs and bottoms
  • Appropriate for many applications, from moulding to shelving
MDF has many advantages over plank wood, particleboard or high density fiberboard. It's very smooth because the wood fibers used in its manufacture are uniform and fine. This makes it have low tear out, which means that when sawed, the end has a smooth cut instead of a jagged edge. This also means that a coat of primer and a couple of coats of paint take well, leaving an attractive, finished surface unlike other composite wood products.
  • MDF is appropriate for many applications because it is smooth, uniform and won't warp
  • Medium density fiberboard or MDF, is a composite wood product similar to particleboard; it's made out of wood waster fibers glued together with resin heat and pressure
  • Does not warp or split and does not expand and contract like nature
  • Oil-base or latex paints can be used when finishing MDF
  • Perfect for accent walls and other projects around the house or office
  • For interior use only
  • California residents see Prop 65 WARNINGS

Questions & Answers

Do you just butt the vertices butt joints when you have longer walls

Do you just butt the vertices butt joints when you have longer walls
Asked by: Joe
If your wall is longer than the 12 foot lengths the product comes in, you can butt the edges. If you are going several layers of the board, you will want to alternate the boards so the butted edges are not over each other and show a single vertical line the length of the layers. This will look better as well as prevent rain or moisture from working in behind the boards. If applied out side on a wall a good exterior paint is recommended. You may want to apply some silicone caulking to the butt joints to help seal the joint. The paint will also help to seal the butted joints.

We have a wall where both edges will be exposed. Do you have to finish the edges with a detail piece?

Asked by: Kc
It depends how you want it to look and what it is exposed to. If the wall is outside you may want to look for a piece of trim of some kind to butt the edge of your shiplap. Caulking outside exposed wood (not painted) would also be recommended. If the ship lap is inside the trim will also help make it looked "finished". Trim could be anything from quarter-round to a door or baseboard type trim. Anytime you caulk a product project (especially before painting) it adds to the look. Careful though in caulking, a sloppy caulk job can make it look bad.

Can MDF shiplap be used for bathroom walls?

Can MDF shiplap be used for bathroom walls?
Asked by: Mike
MDF shiplap can be used for bathroom walls. If using it to create a lapped wood veneer, be sure to seal the edges and corners with some silicone caulking. Also, a good outside paint that is resistant to moisture is recommended. There are many designs you could uses to decorate your bathroom walls with shiplap.
