Questions & Answers

Can this be used for cross bracing to strengthen a floor?

Asked by: clg1715
No. White wood is too weak to be used for bracing. Remember! You get what you pay for. I would always suggest using 2x4 pine. The early 1900s houses always used cross bracing with 2x4s or staggered 2x8s or 2x10s every five to eight feet apart down the length of the floor joist.

Are these pressure treated wood? I need them to hold drywall on basement brick. 2/3 of wall is concrete and 1/3 above grade is brick.can i use these?

Any suggetions on what to use directly in contact to brick? Also i heard that its a good idea not to insulate brick due to it may not dry when wet and damage can occur to bricks holding subfloors. Or can i use 1 inch rigid foam? Is that an option?

1 in. x 3 in. x 8 ft. Furring Strip Board is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 61.

When I cut the straps I found some inner surfaces gouged, with severe bends, loose knots, and knots that spanned boards. The bundle was packed with the best sides showing. Some of the boards would grade as #3

I would recommend anyone who is planning to install paneling on a block wall to use these strips. I used them because they provided a wide area for nailing on the panels. I also used TapCon screws to mount the furring strips to the wall.

These are cheaper than the traditional 2x4; plus it's smaller making it lighter and easier to handle and use. I used them as supporting for the bottom shelf so that the wood won't "sag" over time due to the heavy toy weight. They've worked pretty good so far. They're not perfect because there are a lot of knots in them, plus are warped. For cheaper wood like these you really need to go in the store and pick each out one by one - but that goes for any wood. I've purchased the more expensive 1x3 (~$4/ea) and I still had to go through the pile. For my style, and projects, I think these cheaper wood work amazing. When finished, all it needs is sanding and a staining/painting; I prefer staining because I like the 'rustic'/'farmstyle' style and these knots really give it character. I think its a good alternative for pallet woods. It may not be 'free' but it's a lot less effort needed! Taking apart pallet wood is hard. I rather just buy these instead.

Once I untied the bundles, 2-3 from each bundle were so crooked they are only good for corkscrews. Better quality control from HD would be nice.
