Answer This Question

A:  You could just get the Queen Slat Kit https://www.homedepot.com/p/1-in-x-4-in-x-5-ft-Pine-Queen-Bed-Slat-Board-7-Pack-231575/207182035

A:  Hi Elaine. The 1 x 4 x 10' Select Pine boards will work GREAT for bed slats, and yes, a store associate can cut them in half for you, resulting in the exact length needed to support your 60" wide queen box spring. Money-saving tip: Select is the highest grade board The Home Depot offers. If you don't mind characteristics such as relatively small knots, a less expensive board can safely support your bed.

A:  Yes. The wood is strong, has no knots and is straight. All full service Home Depots will cut the wood for you.

Q:Can these boards be glued together as they are, or do they need to be sanded first? For instance, for building furniture

              Answer This Question

A:  You can use them but I sand them first for better bond and to assure no surface dirt was in place. Just a 100-150 grit quick sand and wipe would help the glue for long term.

              by|Apr 22, 2021

A:  Hi Jeremy. These boards can be glued together just as they are. Minor improvement in adhesion may be achieved by light sanding, but it is not necessary and will require a thorough removal of the wood dust or adhesion can be compromised.

              by|Jul 15, 2020

A:  Hi Jeremy. No sanding is necessary or recommended. You can glue the boards together just as they are right from the store for excellent adhesion. However, first remove any dust or sawdust that may have accumulated during storage or from cutting to size or sanding to build your project.

I bought this to use a trim around some shelves that I installed in my office. It was smooth, easy to work, and made an excellent trim piece on the front edge of my floating shelf. It painted with ease and was very nice appearing. No warping was noticed and it certainly made an easy straight edging for me.

Hi ELYSSA, we hate it when that happens! As you found, when buying lumber, it's best to go to the store and pick it out yourself. Whenever someone else fills your order, they may just grab whatever's handy off the top of the pile, and that could be picked over material that other customers damaged and left behind. We're sorry for your trouble, but glad you found good ones! Thanks for your purchase.

Just my opinion but I think any wood labeled select shouldn't have small gouges on the edges. I was able to find one I could use after searching through the pile .

Good observation, Chuck. Select Pine Boards ship from the mill in excellent condition, without the gouges you regrettably found. However, many people dig through quite a few boards to make their selection and may not realize that though wood is very sturdy, it is also easily scratched, dinged, and gouged if improperly handled. As a courtesy to others, lets' all be gentle and careful in handling lumber, and leave the racks and piles neater and straighter than we found them. Cheers!
