Questions & Answers

do you have to leave a gap?

I would like to put them side by side (no gap) can this be done?
Asked by: roadstar
I use a common paint stirring stick for my gap, it's little less then a quarter inch and having a gap allows for alignment adjustments , after time the gap will open up as they dry out, I live in florida and rainy season they swell more then my paint stick gap but not enough so the pickets touch each other, and recede little more in dry what we call dry season :) Depends how dry your area is, if you want to try no gap.... I have tried no gap and stuff swells and twists over the long term for me when it rains for days here and seems to telegraph all that warping down the fence. If I use a gap only one picket will freak out and warp instead of all 5 next to it if I use no gap..... Also we have alot of wind, so some sort of gap is good to tone down the wind load against the fence which makes it want lean over time..... Honestly it is all preference on gap , no gap... How deep your posts are, how much concrete you used for the posts, and what your ground is like... All fine sugar sand ground around here which tends not hold posts straight over time no matter what you seem to use......... So I guess what works best for your area and situation.

How many to make a fance of 165ft

Asked by: Miguel
around 350, but you can get bad ones in the skid when you buy that many. Id say get the skid of 450 to get the bulk purchase price. use all the good ones and return the rest or keep them for repairs.

Will the store cut this wood to 3.5 inches wide 5 ft. long?

Is there a way to order many of these pickets and have the store cut the wood and when ready, I can pick it up?
Asked by: RobD
Why have them (or you) rip each board and then, have to cut the corner to match the dog ear when you can just buy 3.5 inch pickets for $1.29? All you then would need to do is cut the bottom off to length. http://www.homedepot.com/p/5-8-in-x-3-1-2-in-x-6-ft-Pressure-Treated-Pine-Dog-Ear-Fence-Picket-0200150/100574912 Or, for a little more you can get these cedar tone ones: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Altamit-3-4-in-x-3-1-2-in-x-6-ft-Cedar-Tone-Oil-Brown-Douglas-Fir-Dog-Ear-Fence-Picket-63098/300200477

1 in. x 5-1/2 in. x 6 ft. Pressure-Treated Pine Dog-Ear Fence Picket is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 465.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value I installed nearly 200 feet this last time and probably a thousand feet in the last few years. The best technique I've found to avoid the headaches from warped boards is to purchase a freshly delivered pallet in which the boards are wet and hang them while they're still damp using three stringers spaced so that no more than 6-9in of the pickets extends above or below the top and bottom stringers respectively. I've also noticed that the boards are stacked on the pallet in the order they were sawn and if the same order and facing direction are followed when installing, any lateral warping will be consistent and much less noticeable

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Deal On Pressure Treated Fence Pickets! I purchased 520 of these pickets, over the Memorial Day weekend. I layed them outside to dry, since they were moist, from the pressure treating process. Out of 520 pickets, about 5 boards slightly warped from the drying process. Not enough to affect their usage, or physical appearance. So, I did NOT lose any product, as some reviewers have claimed, that they experienced. Plus, all 520 pickets were selected by store staff; I ordered them on-line, and did not "hand pick" any of them!!!! I simply drove to Home Depot, loaded on my truck, and left. Remarkable, at a price of $1.20, for pressure treated wood! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love These Picket - So Sweet!! I build my privacy fence using these pickets from Home Depot, easy to use and stain. I did hand pick mine at the store and only bought what I could use in a couple days, when I used them up I got more until I was finished the fence is 50' x50' on 3 sides with gates and arbors in the front. If your looking for a good cheap way to put up a fence this it! They have been up now for about 7 months and I have had shrinkage but not alot! Would I use them again knowing what I know now? ABSOLUTELY! Great Product! As you'll see in the picture I laid my boards on the horizontal not vertical. Made a nice looking fence!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fence pickets Whats good about these pickets? 1. pretty consistent size (some variance but that is to be expected.) 2. Rough cut looks great (these are supposed to be rough cut for staining and sealing. If you are looking for smooth finished wood for painting you can expect to sand or purchase a different product. 3. Home Depot loaded my truck for me (saving me 1/2 the backache). Cons: I had to go through a full pallet of these to find the 110 pickets that I wanted for my gates. (That means about 25% of a pallet load would most likely not be useful for gates - lots of knots or cracks.

I ran a string line to ensure the top of the fence was level and when I completed the project I noticed that the bottom was "wavy". When I went back to the store to purchase the remaining 50 boards that I needed, I made sure to hand pick not only for quality but for length. Some of the board were 3/8ths of an inch shorter than specified? I mentioned this to the sales associate and he measured a few and saw the same thing. I know Home Deport does not make these but they should utilize a supplier that has better quality control.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product was ideal solution I reconstructed the back fence using these pressure-treated pickets. Since my house sits on a cul-de-sac, it was not an easy job. The length required 438 individual pickets and the steepness of the creek bank made using complete panels practically impossible. But the individual pickets are light weight and I managed the job by myself. I recommend these pickets to anyone who needs to build a strong, good-looking fence and would like to do the job by themselves.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value per linear foot! Especially bulk purchase. No pre-drilling holes because it doesn't split when you screw through it. Made putting my fence up very easy. If you add up the cost of a 3-1/2" picket, this covers more for less money in total. It's a great value and looks better than the 3-1/2" picket. Once ours dries out, we plan to stain & seal so it will look like cedar.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not to bad for the Price Purchased about 650 Pickets online for a 310 ft fence. Picked up the pickets which were wrapped together with steel on 3 pallets at my local Home depot. When I finally got to open them most were good shape about 30 or so were warped or had mold on them took them back for good ones. All in all fence came out great used screws to hold pickets in place so it would last.
