What size screw should I get to attach a 2x4 to concrete block wall?
        ByNov 27, 2021
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

To attach a 2x4 to a concrete block wall, I would recommend using Tapcon concrete screws that are at least 1-3/4" long. This length will ensure adequate penetration into the concrete block for a secure hold. You could also consider using 2" long screws for added holding power, especially if you are attaching something heavy to the 2x4. Be sure to use the appropriate size drill bit, which is typically included with the screws.

        3 of 4 sheered off
Followed the instructions exactly. Drilled with 3/16” bit 1/2” deeper than needed. When driving in, sheered at almost the exact spot on each one. Had to make 3 extra holes because after they sheered I couldnt get them out. A 10 min job turned into a 2 hour one

The Tapcon Concrete Anchors is a good choice for fastening to masonry. The fasteners come in a verity of sizes and hold fast in concrete and brick. You do have to use a masonry drill bit to make the hole for the Tapcon anchor screw. The screws can be removed easily, unlike masonry nails.

          Useless
Bought these in 2 3/4 inch to attach a 2 x4 to my concrete garage floor. I even predrilled holes in the concrete so they would go in easier. I tried securing 6 tapcon screws and all 6 twisted off leaving metal sticking out of the floor. Had to wreck my concrete to get the broken screws out and then fill the damaged areas with concrete patck. THANKS TAPCON.

            Many screws defective
Several of the screws in the package were defective and had to be discarded. Several of the screws had heads that were filled with metal, making it impossible to get the bit inside the head.

              Blue is Best
These are good concrete screws but if you’ve never drilled into concrete don’t get frustrated when you break them. 3” into a slab will put a lot of stress on this fastener and the concrete has no give unlike steel or wood. Drilling into CMU block you won’t have much trouble but poured concrete is much tougher. Also results may depend on your location as concrete may be harder or softer due to local geography and aggregate mixes. Be prepared to break 1/4 of them in hard concrete
