I believe it would be great for a workbench project. I use this wood regularly. Not only is it cost efficient, but it has yet to fail me in all of my projects.

is it hardwood or softwood

White wood is considered soft wood usually from some sort of pine tree / evergreen and hardwood is generally a leafed tree that sheds in the fall and is considered hardwood. Exception is poplar which is in between soft and hardwood. Google defines Softwoods are frequently used as building materials. Softwoods come from evergreen and conifer trees, such as pine, cedar or spruce. The other class of wood is hardwood, which comes from angiosperms, such as walnut, hickory or maple. Hope this helps answer your question.

Can I use these as slats for a platform bed?

Yes these can be used for a bed, I have built several beds from this same wood.

Can I get the 2inch x4inch shorter size so they would be 55 inches long? Can they be cut down on the store?

Asked by Tonethewarrior4babies December 17, 2016

Yes, you can. The store will do a courtesy cut of perhaps one or two cuts, any more cuts than that, they might charge you extra. If you don't have the saw or don't want to mess with the cut, then let them do it. The fees are very minimum.
