Questions & Answers

Are these boards square or rounded on the edges?

I want to use them to make a tabletop and wondered if they would need to be ripped to join properly.
Asked by: Lou
For the 2x material I have always found that they have rounded over edges. So if you are to join to boards together, for a table top, there will be groove along the joint. Home Depot's 1x material typically has a squared edge allowing you to join them together with little prep work.

What is the weight of this 2 x 8 x 8?
Asked by: FrankM
The weight depends on the individual piece of wood. Wood density and moisture content influence the weight.

If wood is not pressure treated to the appropriate level for the application (ground contact in this case), it will eventually decay.

After surfacing an edge and a face I ripped these down to 6 inches. Every board cupped and bowed so much that they were not useable for my project.

I understand that I bought #2 grade lumber but I had a reasonable belief that I could at least have a 2 x 8 when I cut it down to length, but the board split in two when I cut 2-1/2ft of one end. I guess there was a split in the board that I couldn't see cause the board got limber and had a crack right down the middle. I picked thru the lumber in the rack and this was the best looking, I had a minor looking split but not this bad looking.. O well not my best pick of the day.
