About This Product
Everbilt Fence Post Driver makes installing metal fence posts quicker and easier. The weight of the driver does the pounding for you. The 14 lb. metal cylinder has two handles that are tapered for comfortable hand placement. The red-painted heavy duty steel is tough enough to pound thousands of posts, while being designed to minimize damage to the fence post tops. Installation is easy. Place the weighted cylinder over the top of your T-Post of U-Post, lift and release. Repeat until post is buried to desired depth. Fits posts up to 2-1/2 in. Works best as a T-Post Driver or U-Post Driver, but may be used with other types of fence posts. This manual post driver is great for contractors and professional use, as well as for DIY fence projects.

I'm not sure what you mean by u post. That makes me think of unistrut and the answer is no. This fence post driver is made to work with metal fence posts that have a "wing" attached about 2' from the bottom. You position the post where you want it to be. You put the driver over the top of the post and let it go down to the point where it is sitting on the "wing". Then use the handles on the sides to raise it up and rapidly down against the "wing". It's just like driving a nail or a stake except the impact is at the bottom against the "wing". The center piece of it is just a 2' long piece of 3" pipe.

I have driven a few dozen green fence posts and they go in well in our clay soil. If you are driving into a soft bottom lake you should be all right.
The centerpiece of the driver is a piece of 3" pipe. It is made to go over the end of the metal fence posts that have the "wing" attached about 2' from the bottom. You put the driver over the top of the post and use the handles to drive it down. For what you want to do I can see welding a flat piece of steel on the top of it so there is a place for the impact to happen.
