The spikes are about 3" long. I was careful and aware of how the pipes were laid by seeing where the sprinkler heads came up.
It should, it would require more elbow grease but it should work
It certainly helps--my lawn is mostly clay.
I don't know since we don't have clay. But if it is not soft, then it should be okay.
Yes, this will work in clay.
This will work with any hard soil.
No, it isn't big enough for plugs
This is not a plug / core aerator, nor does it have an electrical plug. This is a spike aerator.
Yes, the aerator does have an electrical plug.
Nope

No hole only spikes about 1/2 inch.... I push the unit back and forth to enlarge the hole...
No - doesn't pull plugs. I have a hand held plug tool too, but it couldn't even pierce the hard packed soil I have, even when I applied water - however these spikes enter with little issue and I just move it back and forth to increase the holes. This will work great for my need.
Yes, it creates pores in the lawn to allow air, water, and nutrients to the grass roots.
aerator
No. The spike aerator does not pull plugs from the soil. It leaves holes in the soil so that oxygen, fertilizer, etc. can reach the roots of the grass
If the plug isn't already rooted, it will pull it up
The spikes only makes holes, but provides air to grass roots.
NO holes only,,,, I push the unit back and forth a little to enlarge the hole.
Dear Valued Home Depot Customer, We reached out to MFG for more information and below is their response. “ This is a new item for this season. Home Depot’s website has all the information available. The spikes on this aerator are solid. This aerator pokes holes in the ground but does not remove a plug of earth. "
Hi Arthur. Thank you for your question. The Steel Spike Aerator by Ames only pokes holes into the ground but it does not remove any cores. There is a model by Hound Dog called the “Hound Dog Coring Aerator” that will pull plugs out of your lawn. The Hound Dog Coring Aerator is only available online at Homedepot.com http://www.homedepot.com/p/Hound-Dog-Coring-Aerator-HDP35/202605482 Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Use it on small lawns. Step and drive the spikes; pull them out. Repeat as needed (needed a lot but it gets the job done and you don't have to rent and return equipment).
It is a good workout. But if you have kids, or grand-kids, it is a good way for them to earn money.
