Questions & Answers

How long are the spikes?

I have a irrigation system for my lawn and just want to make sure that the spikes will not damage the pipes that are below the ground surface.
Asked by: Hootie
The spikes are about 3" long. I was careful and aware of how the pipes were laid by seeing where the sprinkler heads came up.

I had read of another reviewer who did that and thought it was a great idea. It worked pretty well. I am a male 150 lbs. I did 7 - 10 sq. ft a minute depending on the section. The whole thing took me 3 hours spread over 2 days. I used a surveyors reel tape to make a line and keep track of where I was working. It took some time lining up with the tape but in the thickest parts of the lawn it was impossible to see the holes so I needed it to stay straight. Initially I also used the tape for separation measurement but ended up using the tip of my foot sticking through the aerator to ballpark the 6-8 inches. Sections of lawn that were sloped were the hardest because I couldn't really get a good rhythm to kind of "walk" easily. With flat sections I could kind of rock a little back and forth to walk, but sloped to my curb I couldn't I'd fall over. Like the other reviewers I got blisters, even though I wore work gloves. In my opinion this tool works best to aerate established lawns. If you use it on just areas of dirt (I have a patchy lawn) the dirt can stick to tines, and though it still works you'll have to clean the base of the tines occasionally. Periodically I'd turn them upside down and just kind of work the tines against each other and the compacted dirt would fall off. Another thing is at my store in Port Chester they had a dozen of these but I passed over several that had incomplete welds on some of the tines. So check the welds. This is the longest review I've ever made about anything. I hope you enjoyed it and good luck.

Bought two like another reviewer suggested and did the "Herman Muenster" walk around my entire lawn. Didn't take long at all using this method. Used it the day after it rained to make my work quick since the ground is more likely to be softer. This tool could use rubber molding on the handles to prevent calluses which I did get. Next time I will use gloves for added padding. Overall I'm happy with my purchase. Beware there are very few available at the local store. My store showed it had only 3 available. Talked to 3 employees who said its probably a mistake and none in stock to be found. Found a 4th employee and thanks to his patience; he was able to locate them in the overhead bins called "coffins." So happy he went the extra mile. I bought 2 and am pleased I got them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great for small patches of lawn, very easy to use I have an old matted lawn with very hard rocky soil that needs to to be completely replaced, but like most people, I have a list of 20 other more important items on my home improvement list. I previously tried making my own aerator out of 2x4s and 8" galvanized nails, but let's just say that it was a bit of a workout to use and I'm lucky I didn't stab myself in foot with it. At the time I didn't realize that this product existed, or else I would have purchased it instead. This aerator is so much easier and better than my home made contraption. It's light weight, easy to hold, and easy to press into the lawn with my foot. The spikes are only a few inches long, which I'm assuming is adequate, and when using it, I don't hit rocks or get stuck quickly in the hard soil. I just set it on the lawn, stand on it, and maybe wiggle it a little, and the spikes easily sink in the ground. In a few minutes, I was able to thoroughly aerate a 4' x 4' patch of my lawn. I'll try and spend a few minutes each week doing a different section, and I'll eventually complete my 20x20 lawn. Good product, I wish I would have known about it sooner.
