How long are the spikes?
Asked by Hootie October 22, 2016
The spikes are about 3" long. I was careful and aware of how the pipes were laid by seeing where the sprinkler heads came up.

I buy this in March 2020, I am very happy with it in the beginning. it does what it is supposed to do to poke holes in the ground. It works best after a heavy rain especially my yard is mixed with stones and clay. I wish the spikes are longer and wider. After a while, I noticed one of the spikes is bent,. Since the label says it has 15 years warranty, I wish I can collect the warranty, but I don't know how. See attached pic. I give it a three star, because it still does its job.
Works great for small patches of lawn, very easy to use
I have an old matted lawn with very hard rocky soil that needs to to be completely replaced, but like most people, I have a list of 20 other more important items on my home improvement list.
I previously tried making my own aerator out of 2x4s and 8" galvanized nails, but let's just say that it was a bit of a workout to use and I'm lucky I didn't stab myself in foot with it. At the time I didn't realize that this product existed, or else I would have purchased it instead.
This aerator is so much easier and better than my home made contraption. It's light weight, easy to hold, and easy to press into the lawn with my foot. The spikes are only a few inches long, which I'm assuming is adequate, and when using it, I don't hit rocks or get stuck quickly in the hard soil.
I just set it on the lawn, stand on it, and maybe wiggle it a little, and the spikes easily sink in the ground. In a few minutes, I was able to thoroughly aerate a 4' x 4' patch of my lawn. I'll try and spend a few minutes each week doing a different section, and I'll eventually complete my 20x20 lawn.
Good product, I wish I would have known about it sooner.

Perfect for what it's supposed to do. While I don't recommend using this to aerate an area as large as 1,600sqft as I did, it's perfect for any area that doesn't require a larger, powered machine. I highly recommend watering the lawn for several days before using this as it makes inserting the prongs in to the soil much easier. I did this and had a couple of days of steady rain and it made it much easier to use. Aerating was the only way that the grass seed I needed to spread would have allowed it to grow.
In addition to simply inserting the prongs in to the ground I suggest working the post forward and back to loosen up extremely dense soil. It's extra work, but worth the results. And wear gloves.
I wanted to Aerate my lawn a bit at a time whenever I felt like it. A company will do me yard for about $100. To he downside you that is I have to mark all of my sprinkler heads & listen to a lawn maintenance sales pitch. I don’t have a truck & my Home Depot often does not have aerators avail to rent. I have started using it, 45 minutes at a time. As others have stated; wear gloves & make sure the ground is moist. Usually I don’t use my foot, just push it into the ground with my arms. Well built & hope to use it for years.
