Questions & Answers

can this key be used to turn off the main water to the house?

Asked by: blondie
It depends, if the valve handle is less than 6/8" wide it should fit. It is ALMOST 3/4" wide...I am pretty certain this is made to fit the majority of water shut off valves for residential units.

Can this key be used to turn the water off from the street in Charlotte, NC

The main water valve inside the house is leaking. I need to turn the water off in the street so I repair or replace the valve.
Asked by: Molasses
I could not use it to turn off my street valve in Dallas Texas ( it bent and failed) - my valve was very tight so it might work on yours better but it did not do the job for me!

28 in. Steel Curb Key is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 198.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Did the job Used it a couple of times on our main while replacing some leaky hose bibs and water pipe, seems like pretty light weight steel, but worked just fine and kept my hands away from the Black Widow camping out near the valve, and worked well to smash said Black Widow.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cheap I've tried to use this shutoff key several times and it's flimsy and barely big enough for proper leverage. It did the job but only after a huge fight. What it really needs is to have a bigger handle and a wider tip with less play in it. I've used other keys with solid tips and they work effortlessly. The stamped steel tip on this one is really what makes this almost unusable. Do yourself a favor and find a better product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quailty I purchased two of these both broke on first use. The weld where the pole attaches to the U at the base is very low quality. Suggest finding another manufacturer. I went to a local welding shop and had them make one for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from it needs a thicker handle It turned the valve after some added elbow grease but did the job. The handle and shaft are both the same stock a little to thin for the length you can see it twist a little. I was working with a 37 year old valve that was buried for who knows how long. It worked but needed a lot of support. The fork end began to flex aswell. Newer valves that have seen light and some maintenance should work fine with this.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not work for me The LADWP valves are notorious for being very stiff, mine is no exception. I tried several times to open the valve back up after dwp shut it off for me to make repairs. I tried putting pipes on the handles get a better grip, The tool just twisted and the valve stayed put. I had to call DWP to turn it on for me. Now I have a twisted curb key that I will attempt to return. Maybe if your valve at the curb is newer and not as stiff this tool will be adequate, but it was not for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect tool for good price I was replacing the main shutoff valve to my house. I bought this tool to close the street valve at the water meter. It's perfect tool for the job, for a good price. Remember to turn 180 degree to close the value(or until the holes align), not 90 degree.
