Does a backflow preventer work in lieu of an anti siphon valve

Asked by Ted April 27, 2019

That depends on the configuration of the sprinkler zone. I have one zone which has sprinklers on the top and bottom of an inclined bank. The vertical distance between the highest and lowest sprinklers is about 8 feet. An anti siphon valve ( or backflow preventer) is fitted on the top of the bank to prevent drainage of the top pipe through the lower sprinklers. Having a backflow preventer on the valve would not help if the valve is placed at the bottom of the bank.

I have a leek at the siphon valve can you help me to get to the project

You need to do three things before deciding to change a sprinkler valve body: 1. First check make sure that the bleeder valve is completely closed. 2. Then check make sure the solenoid valve is completely closed. These valve may come lose after a long time of use. 3. If the two steps above does not stop the external visible leak, remove the dust cap on the outlet and see if the water keeps rising and going out in the pipe. If not sure, try using a turkey baster or similar home tool to remove the excess water from inside of the return valve housing. If the water keep rising, shut of the water to the sprinkler valve and remove the inlet valve cover and inspect the valve diaphragm for the accumulated deposits. If you see any clean the valve diaphragm and check it for any sign of rupture, tears or pin holes. If any signs of rupture or pin holes you need to replace the valve diaphragm. Other wise put valve back together and turn on the sprinkler shutoff valve (don't put the dust cover back on the outlet yet) to see if there is still sign of water leak (make sure the sprinkler system solenoid is not energized) by checking the outlet. If the water continues to leak, you definitely need to change the valve diaphragm at this point. If none of above steps help, then you have no choice other than changing the body valve. I hope this helps. By the way all the above steps may take no more than 15 minutes, and may save you some money and extra work.

Check the manufacturer website. Look at any old plumbing supply place or restore shop. Or, just purchase new ones...about $12. If exposed to constant sunlight other parts will begin to fail in short time.

Threaded fitting is loose, used sch. 80 nipple and teflon tape. It leaks and it's tight. I guess if you use sch. 40 threaded adapter it might seat against the shoulder but not normal tapered threaded fittings.

I PURCHASE 5 VALVES 3 OUT OF 5 HAVE ARE DEFECTIVE THERE IS A LEAK IN THE MIDDLE. UNFORTUNATELY I DISPOSED THE PACKAGING CONTAINER. I SPENT SO MANY HOURS INSTALLING THE NEW VALVES AND I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE LEAK; I HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO REPLACE IT BECAUSE OF THE HOT WEATHER AND MY GRASS NEEDED WATER.

I decided to buy a brand new valve instead of replacing the worn out parts. So glad they still make this model so that the inlet and outlet distance is the same as my old valve.

Product is decent for the price. One common issue is that the cap for the diaphragm loosens and blows off easily, scattering internal parts everywhere. I’ve experienced that scenario roughly 10% of the time over the past 6 years with this product.

I had to buy the complete Anti-Siphon Valve due to the fact that there were no complete rebuild kits in stock. The original valve that is the one at issue is piped in so that one cut would result in numerous modifications to the manifold & the other valves. I simply replaced the internal parts with those from the new valve. The repair was pretty strait forward but I did lube all of the o-rings and joints when reassembling.
