Does your XDT14 have any vibration/wobble issue on long spade bits ? Also -when tool is off -do you feel any backlash(mechanical gap) in anvil mechanism when you shake the tool back & forth ? Thanks
I feel a slight wobble with some spade bits but I rarely use it with an impact, only when I'm in a jam. I don't think I feel what you're asking in the 2nd part of the question

What is the differences in the letter suffixes at the end of the model number XDT14? The XDT14 M, R, T, and Z. I found a XDT14 in the store dsiplay that was an orphan which wouldn't sell. It was a lot shorter (back of mortor- to tip of socket) than any other model and that's what I need. Is it safe to assume that they are all identical XDT14 tools and the letters just signify the packaging configuration, ie: different amp-hour battery included/not included?

Maddog, that is incorrect. All the model number XDT14 drivers are 3 speed. You are thinking of the XDT11, 12, and 13. This question asks specifically about the XDT14, only.
Is there any great difference between the 14z vs the 12z

The XDT12Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless Quick-Shift Mode 4-Speed Impact Driver, Tool Only is equipped with 4 speeds and is slightly smaller (2.3lbs) than the XDT14Z (2.9lbs) 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless Quick-Shift Mode 3-Speed Impact Driver, Tool Only which is equipped with 3 speeds.
Not really, just a little more torque and longer run time. If used often I would go for the 14v. If used a lot like mine upgrade to a 18v. The sellection of 18v tools is huge.
Besides the 12 being four-speed and the 14 being three-speed, there is another significant feature to the 12. The specs on the Makita's website state that the 12 "features Assist Mode, which helps eliminate 'screw cam-out' and 'cross threading' by driving at low speed until tightening begins. It is ideal for driving longer fasteners."
