Do you need to buy the large machine that's plugged up

Answer This Question

No, that is our GE Smart 40,000 Grain Water Softener. It isn't needed for the Whole House Water Filtration System, but it is nice to have if you have hard water.

Product information states that water flow can be turned off remotely. How is that accomplished?

    Answer This Question

This isn't a Smart model but our GXWH70M has this ability. It provides leak protection (notification through the SmartHQ app on your phone). You can review this model on our geappliances.com site.

I just changed the filter but now when I put the handle to the filter position, no water will flow through.

      Answer This Question

The final steps of the filter replacement instructions are reinstall the sump to the unit by placing the sump over the filter and aligning the sump pins with the system cap arms as you push the handle down into place. Rotate valve handle knob 180° to the filter position, where it is aligned with the handle. Press the red pressure release button to remove trapped air. Turn the water back on and flush the cartridge for 10 minutes, wait one hour and flush again for 10 minutes. Now the filter is ready for use. If you continue having difficulty, please call our Innovations Team directly at 1-800-952-5039 (option 1) hours - 8-6 EST M-F. as they may have additional tips to offer you.

I replaced the filter but it's not clear how to reset the filter life in the app. It should be as easy as tapping the filter life and hitting "reset".

Make sure the location selected for the filter is protected from freezing and not exposed to direct sunlight. We recommend you review the "Proper Installation" section on pg. 1 of the Installation Instructions: https://images.thdstatic.com/catalog/pdfImages/0e/0e67ce62-144a-4e8a-95f4-431e8d0673cf.pdf.

                  Poor handle design
The handle has snapped on me 2 times now. Had to buy a complete unit to fix it. It has snapped. This is the second time looking for a way to make this a metal handle. If you have this you know the handle removes the filter. Or. Pops the housing to replace the filter. The water filter itself does a good job. Of getting the rust out that we have. Just took photos. You can see the handle is hollow. Poor design . Trying to figure out a new handle system . Not buying a replacement unit. Will look for a whole new system of I have to

I highly recommend these Whole House Water Filters
I agree with PlumbingPro, this is a great Whole House Water Filter. Some people, like the negative review he references, appear to think there is no need to read the instructions or the manual, both of which GE makes available. Then when they mess things up, instead of accepting the responsibility for their mistake, they look for someone else to blame for their own mistake. Too bad, but please don’t blame GE for your mistakes. As PlumbingPro said, all the negative review would have had to do if he had read the instructions and manual is turn the inlet/outlet 180 degrees, and his problem would have been solved! Simple! But as for me, although I have 54 years experience in all aspects of building and remodeling, I still read the instructions and the manual for my GXWH50M Whole House Water Filters. Very well done, GE! I chose to buy two of these whole house water filters, and install them in series, the first one with the purple basic filter, and the second one with the yellow advanced filter. I might consider using the green premium filter in the future, but we’ll see. And I bought a spare filter for each. My only regret, if you want to call it that, is that I wish I had gotten the GXWH70M, that automatically tells you when the filter needs changing, a very nice added feature. But the supplier I bought from didn’t have that model. So I’ll just have to keep tabs on it myself, simple enough\, I just put a reminder in my calendar to check it every three months, a very simple solution. One other thing that some people have mentioned is a reduction in water pressure. Some are having their filters quickly get clogged up with what appears to be a lot of sediment. My conclusion about that is that they are getting their water from their own well, and that perhaps their well pump is sitting too low, down into the gravel or sediment at the bottom of their well. We can’t blame GE or any manufacturer for that. I set my well pump about 15 feet off the bottom of the well to avoid that problem, a simple fix. The well pump itself will last a lot longer that way too. And I have no problem with filters getting clogged. My water pressure gauge is in line after the water filters, and after almost 3 months, it shows no loss of pressure at all. My bottom line is that I very highly recommend these Whole House Water Filters, either the GXWH50M, or the GXWH7M, both are an excellent choice, and both do a great job to protect appliances, and filter your water.

                      Upgrade was worth it
Had an older version of a simple filter, the narrow gray kind, and decided to upgrade the existing UV light and particulate filter. The instructions were a bit sketchy but any handy person can figure it out. I like the solid mount, used tap cons into a an ancient basement wall. Choose the mid grade (yellow) filter because of cost.

                        Fantastic filter! My highest recommendation!
After seeing the very negative review by BigDaddyOH, I felt the need to write my own personal review. I just hate seeing good people, who are truly needing good advice, misguided by blooming idiots. The filter clearly shows the Inlet and Outlet flow direction (see my attached photos). The flow direction can be easily swapped by simply turning the water connection on the back of the filter 180 degrees. No tools required, simply grab it and turn it. It can even be turned so that the water connections are in a vertical orientation, if needed for your particular installation. This is all stated very clearly in the manual…. you just have to read it. The filter works great and has a selection of 3 different filter cartridges that you can choose with different micron sizes that you can select per your specific needs. I prefer the medium micron (the one with yellow plastic ends) as it has a nice balance of filtering very fine particulates, while not significantly reducing water pressure. And it couldn’t be easier to replace the filter cartridge when it is time to do so. Again, I just hate when idiots post reviews and misguide good people who are looking for good advice. Get this filter and my bet is that you will love it, as much as I do.

Can the WH unit be run without a filter in the housing? I just replaced the filter 2 days ago with a FTHTM(granulated carbon) and the outside of the filter is already covered in an iron substance(mud) that hasn’t appeared in the past until 2-3 months into a new filter. I’m looking to clean the exterior of the filter off, but I need to know if I can run the system without a filter installed? My water pressure has dropped dramatically 2 days after installation.

Vertical water main and DIY ppl:
First: this filter is great!! Immediately removed chlorine from our city water. Water smelled like nothing, usually smells like pool water. When installing however, the diagram for vertical water mains is INCORRECT. Refer to the photo. You want to make sure the bracket is positioned so that the E cutouts face DOWN if your water main is going to come up from below the unit. Water coming in connects to left, water going into home on right. Filter will be on right side.

                                not so easy
I installed this today thought about $150 worth of parts to do what I needed My house being a newer home has the water line coming into the house inside the wall I had to cut the wall open to access the main water line it turned out pretty good but the instructions are terrible not clear on how to use it I had to try to figure out how to orientate it for vertical the instructions were very vague and didn't even explain how to install the filter after I put it all together it didn't seem right and realize that you have to lock in the filter and I couldn't find that in the instructions, I have to say after the install the water does definitely taste better sweeter I'm glad that I did it. but frustrated with the instructions, Also don't push the red button water spewed everywhere I'm not even sure what the red button is for I'm trying to find out in the instructions.

                                  Low water pressure
This unit is very nice looking and easy to install using shark bite fittings. Unfortunately the line coming off my main is 1inch and the inside diameter of the filter is 1/2inch so greatly reduced water pressure especially when more than one shower was on. Would love for GE to have this setup that started out at 1inch and was able to reduce rather than the current configuration. If you have a large house or lines larger than 3/4 I would recommend looking into a different unit. I did remove it. :(

Replaced whole home filter with this system and I love it. Old system used wrench to twist to tighten or to remove. Had the system for 10 years and it would drip and I would have to use a mallet to loosen the filter to change it. This system uses a lever to seat or release the filter. No dripping and filter works great. It took a plumber about 45 minutes to install if (like me) you don't trust yourself with plumbing work.
